Having left Genesis the previous summer, Peter’s first solo album arrived in February 1977. He was 26.
With legendary producer Bob Ezrin taking charge the intention was to make something more direct and tougher than what had come before.
    “I really wanted the first record to be different from what I’d done with Genesis so we were trying to do things in different styles. A bit of barbershop, which Tony Levin helped with, there were more bluesy things, a variety of songs and arrangements that were consciously trying to provide something different than what I’d done before.”

The self-titled debut album, affectionately known as CAR, due to the iconic Hipgnosis designed cover is available on either CD or heavyweight LP.

Peter Gabriel tells why he left Genesis in "Solsbury Hill," the key track on his 1977 solo debut. Majestically opening with an acoustic guitar, the song finds Gabriel's talents gelling, as the words and music feed off each other, turning into true poetry. It stands out dramatically on this record, not because the music doesn't work, but because it brilliantly illustrates why Gabriel had to fly on his own. Though this is undeniably the work of the same man behind The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, he's turned his artiness inward, making his music coiled, dense, vibrant. There is still some excess, naturally, yet it's the sound of a musician unleashed, finally able to bend the rules as he wishes. That means there are less atmospheric instrumental sections than there were on his last few records with Genesis, as the unhinged bizarreness in the arrangements, compositions, and productions, in tracks such as the opener "Moribund the Burgermeister" vividly illustrate. He also has turned sleeker, sexier, capable of turning out a surging rocker like "Modern Love." If there is any problem with Peter Gabriel, it's that Gabriel is trying too hard to show the range of his talents, thereby stumbling occasionally with the doo wop-to-cabaret "Excuse Me" or the cocktail jazz of "Waiting for the Big One" (or, the lyric "you've got me cookin'/I'm a hard-boiled egg" on "Humdrum"). Still, much of the record teems with invigorating energy (as on "Slowburn," or the orchestral-disco pulse of "Down the Dolce Vita"), and the closer "Here Comes the Flood" burns with an anthemic intensity that would later become his signature in the '80s. Yes, it's an imperfect album, but that's a byproduct of Gabriel's welcome risk-taking -- the very thing that makes the album work, overall..

Peter Gabriel erzählt, warum er Genesis in "Solsbury Hill", dem Schlüsselstück seines Solo-Debüts 1977, verließ. Majestätisch mit einer akustischen Gitarre öffnend, findet das Lied Gabriels Talent, Gelieren, wie sich die Wörter und die Musik von einander ernähren und sich in wahre Poesie verwandeln. Es hebt sich dramatisch von dieser Platte ab, nicht weil die Musik nicht funktioniert, sondern weil es brilliant illustriert, warum Gabriel alleine fliegen musste. Obwohl dies unbestreitbar das Werk des gleichen Mannes hinter The Lamb Lies Down am Broadway ist, hat er seine Artistik nach innen gerichtet, so dass seine Musik in sich zusammengerollt, dicht und lebendig wird. Es gibt natürlich immer noch einen gewissen Überfluss, doch es ist der Klang eines entfesselten Musikers, der endlich in der Lage ist, die Regeln so zu beugen, wie er es wünscht. Das heißt, es gibt weniger atmosphärische Instrumentalstücke als bei seinen letzten Aufnahmen mit Genesis, wie die bizarre Unordnung in den Arrangements, Kompositionen und Produktionen in Tracks wie dem Opener "Moribund the Burgermeister" anschaulich zeigt. Er ist auch schlanker geworden, sexier, in der Lage, einen schwankenden Rocker wie "Modern Love" zu produzieren. Wenn es ein Problem mit Peter Gabriel gibt, dann versucht Gabriel zu sehr, die Bandbreite seiner Talente zu zeigen und stolpert dabei gelegentlich mit dem Doo Wop-zu-Cabaret "Excuse Me" oder dem Cocktail-Jazz von "Waiting for the Big One" "(oder, die Lyrik" du hast mich kochen lassen / ich bin ein hart gekochtes Ei "auf" Humdrum "). Dennoch strotzt viel von der Platte mit belebender Energie (wie auf "Slowburn" oder dem orchestralen Disco-Puls von "Down the Dolce Vita"), und je näher "Here Comes the Flood" brennt mit einer hymnischen Intensität, die später werden würde seine Unterschrift in den 80er Jahren. Ja, es ist ein unvollkommenes Album, aber das ist ein Nebeneffekt von Gabriels willkommener Risikobereitschaft - genau das, was das Album insgesamt funktioniert.
