Label/Format: Blue Horizon – original matt blue format with textured surfaces. Later ones had a more smooth finish.

Label Conditions: Both in stunning conditions that simply defy their great age, as does the entire album itself. Ultra clean, fresh and highly attractive with beautiful first textured surfaces. I am struggling to find any spindle traces at all – maybe one on side one as seen with a magnifying glass.. Put this into true perspective: this is a 46+-year-old mono record, and one of the famous and popular on this most collectable specialist blues label. Few will survive quite like this, both record and inner are practically factory-fresh with sound to match. A genuine connoisseur-quality example of this legendary album.

Original Year of Release: 1968

Matrix Nos: 7-63200 A1 / 7-63200 B1. The stampers appear to be A1 / A3, these seldom clear on CBS records and are my best interpretation.

Musicians: Peter Green - vocals, guitar; Jeremy Spencer - vocals, guitar; John McVie - bass; Mick Fleetwood - drums. Bob Brunning played bass on ‘Long Grey Mare’.

Brief Info: The self-titled debut album from the legendary blues-era Fleetwood Mac from 1968. With the equally famous dog and dustbin cover artwork, this vintage album sounds nothing like the commercial AOR band that sold millions of albums in the latter 1970s and beyond. Fronted by Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer, vocals are shared by both. This was real British blues and on one of the most famous and prestigous labels of the genre. It proved successful too peaking at No 4 in the UK charts even though it had no singles included. A supreme very early mono copy and it plays beautifully with clean, distortion-free sound. This is a diamond for any blues fan and collector and could prove a significant, if not massive upgrade for many. I have seen some top copies of this before, but I believe this one even surpasses all others to date – this is an extraordinary example that truly does come close to reminding of new.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with the front laminated, this wraps around the top and bottom edges into the inside and not on to the back. The spine is not laminated, hence vulnerable and fragile. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd and includes the ‘Patent Pending’ text.

Lamination & Front: The laminate looks clean, shiny, fresh and very clear with minimal traces of friction rubs or dulling, even under angled light. A fine rim impression dull is seen near the top edge only under light, that rarely can be avoided on a cover this great age. There is no lifting and any of the few surfaces creases, fine and faint, barely even showing with normal full-on viewing. Even the unprotected fine strips on the natural laminate ends right and left sides have no issues. That famous ‘Dog & Dustbin’ graphic will rarely be seen looking better on an original mono cover.

Cover Back: If the front is impressive, the back is little short of exceptional. Very wear-prone indeed being matt black finished, this is susceptible to fingermarks, rubbing and especially ringwear of which this has avoided. Any handling traces are tiny and faint and this has avoided any creasing. A very small hint of a rub on the central top edge, but I am 99% certain this is a tiny printing blemish and not even a rub at all – it is being ultra critical to even mention such trivia on such an outstanding back at all. This really does retain an incredible freshness and deep blackness, an absolute beauty and this side especially will prove immensely difficult to match or find better.

Top Edge: Pristine: made very thin and still ultra straight with no wear at all.

Bottom Edge: Smooth and straight with no wear whatsoever, both these edges are exceptional and will rarely be seen as such.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp, the back which is trimmed a fraction shorter than the front in manufacture, very sharp. The front leading edge has a there merest hint thickening and minor burring seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge which is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. Few will ever be found better when left totally natural.

Spine and Text: Exceptional: the spine has no laminate protection but still in superb condition. Solid, still mainly straight, uncompressed with the text centred a little low on a very narrow depth, and importantly, all is PRISTINE. Yes, as can be seen on my close-up areas of the spine, all text is as made. I have rarely seen this before on this cover, most spines like this are seen badly rubbed, devoid of text, even threadbare, they hardly get much better. It is this type of detail that makes the difference between average and exceptional.

Corners: All the corners are immaculate, practically as made with knocks, dinks or creases. Unrubbed and looking practically as-made with nigh-on perfect crisp shape retained.

Cover Summary: A hugely impressive all-round example of this famous late 1960’s cover, this is approaching connoisseur territory and again, it could prove a major upgrade for many. One to please most collectors, these are seldom seen as such.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a heavy-duty polylined plain white inner. Very gently aged with the usual seam adhesive darkening and a tiny reference number on the top right corner area. Two ultra crisp and undamaged window circles and super-clear lining. Barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++) / MINT(–): a superb visual copy that is very clean with lovely shine, intense black and solidly pressed. One very fine surface mark on side one with NO sound whatsoever. Under bright angled light, any surface traces minuscule. I have rarely seen a mono record look better or less used. Visually a sublime record that should please most-all collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This landmark blues record that introduced the world to this legendary band plays up to, and above it’s visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. My first listen to a mono copy of this for some time time, but well worthy of the wait. Excellent production and impressive clean sound makes for the most pleasurable experience, it delivers the music quite differently to the stereo version of course. Any surface sounds barely even registered on this beautifully preserved record, the mono presentation of the music truly outstanding. A more punchy, dynamic presentation from mono. A clean pressing with no manufacture issues and tracking effortless. Mono classics of this vintage are seldom seen cleaner and sound better, this too played on clinical stereo equipment for which this was not really designed for. But when found like this, they are pieces of genuine beauty, most ruined by heavy usage on heavy tracking Dansettes and the like. In vinyl terms, this looks hardly even run-in and finding this better will prove immensely challenging. A blues masterpiece in fantastic condition, like the cover, the record would almost certainly prove a significant upgrade for many. Do not lose this one – unreserved recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
