Tauhid is Pharoah Sanders' debut as a leader on Impulse Records, and good gawd what a debut. The a-side, "Upper Egypt & Lower Egypt," is an absolute masterpiece of late 60s jazz, but what makes it especially stunning as a debut is that Sanders' sax doesn't arrive until around the twelve minute mark. The track starts out loose and mysterious, with some fantastic freer sounds smoldering their way through dark paths. Sonny Sharrock's playing is especially great on this first part. At around nine minutes, Sharrock, Henry Grimes, Dave Burrell, and Roger Blank lay down a slightly strange but irresistible groove for Sanders' classic overblown, majestic sound to come soaring over. The hypnotic groove, Sanders' wail, the slow build--what a way to announce yourself.
The b-side is also great, although not quite reaching the same heights (I mean, how could it?). "Japan" sounds pretty dated, although the musicians play it so sincerely it still works. The medley that closes the album gets intense, and very free, even for Sanders. Sharrock is particularly exciting on this one, and Sanders pulls the group back into gentler melodies often enough to surprise you when he lifts off again. This is easily my favorite Sanders' album, and I think it might be his best--or at least the one that still sounds the freshest.
