Rarity: Quite Rare, and is arguably rarer than the first pressing. This is a very early second pressing, and the first version on the new look black and silver label. The label shows the text ‘SOLD IN U.K. SUBJECT TO RESALE PRICE CONDITIONS’ on the bottom area of the rim – this is crucial for this pressing. This information was removed from UK records in the middle of 1969, hence this issue cannot be later than that. The third pressing is very similar, but the text mentioned previously is no longer there. Also, this includes the ‘Gramophone Co Ltd’ text, later changed to ‘EMI Records’. Originally – like first pressings of there next album ‘More’ – there is only one EMI box at 6 o’clock position on the label, later versions had two. The cover is the same as the original 1968 first pressing. This particular issue was only available for a short few months and is not seen often, especially in really lovely condition.

Label/Format: Columbia with matt, very gently textured surfaces. All the revelant information on these is seen above, and can be clearly seen on my pictures.

Label Conditions:  Both generally clean, still quite fresh and attractive. Any marks or blemishes small and very few and light. Only a small few quite light and fine spindle marks each side. All evidence suggests only a lightly played copy – and importantly, it plays superbly throughout.

Catalogue Number: SCX 6258.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Few vintage records are ever perfectly ‘flat’, so some slight or very gentle arm movement is normal. If any record I offer has more than that, I will mention it, and it can be assumed all I offer will track without issues, even on budget turntables.

Brief Artist & Album Info:  The second Pink Floyd album, and last to feature Syd Barrett. This for me is one of their very best albums from their superior spacey, psychedelic era. All very different from their later works. This is a really impressive genuine second early pressing, and one that looks and plays superbly.

Cover Grade and Format:  EXCELLENT:  A single format with the front and closed edges laminated. The back main panel is matt and smooth. This has three external rear flipbacks. and was printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd, with Patents pending text. Also ‘File under popular : Pop Groups’ on the top right flipback end. This cover is the same as the very first pressed copies from 1968.

Cover Front: Still clean, fresh and attractive with the lovely psych artwork still seen to near maximum advantage under shiny and unlifted laminate. No major creasing, but a few fine ones on the spine edge that few covers this great age can hope to avoid totally. One other light surface one on the bottom edge towards the as well, any others ultra light and faint, and almost ‘lost’ against the dark complex graphic of the sleeve. All quite minimal in context. Still a very fine looking front to be held and enjoyed.

Cover Back: The main matt back panel is still clean and fresh and has avoided creasing or ring wear with minimal traces of any rubbing. There are a couple of surface marks – one fine (above ‘pinkfloyd’), and an ultra fine one just to the right of it). Any other blemishes few and very faint indeed. For a dark unprotected area, this has generally faired very well. The three flipbacks are neat and solid with no lifting or damage. Yes, a few laminate creases on the spine flipback end, with just one fine one on the top, and two on the bottom. In construction of the cover, the top flipback is not folded quite straight, so reveals a slim white line of plain card beneath its end. A totally natural trait of manufacture and pretty minor. But I try to mention all the facts I see.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both very close to as-made, being thin, but still very straight with full laminate retention.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Still neat with any thickening to the front edge quite patchy and only light, the back edge still crisp and impressive with any thickening traces minimal, little and slight.

Spine and Text:  Again, fully laminated with the text pristine. Quite straight with any compression light, the ends like gently nipped in manufacture.

Corners: All corners retain very fine to excellent shape with no knocks or dinks. Just the top left has a tip chip to reveal the white card beneath.

Cover Summary:  A very fine example of this original vintage, classic psych cover. With most of any issues or blemishes mild and light, it will prove difficult to find significantly better and should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT+:  This is the original black and white EMI promotional unlined inner sleeve. It is flipback constructed with ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’  text/ Any ageing, creasing or discolouration mild and light, with all the edges unsplit, naturally intact. The recessed top opening very crisp, untorn and beautifully neat. This in unusually fine condition as well.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and arguably better still, this is real nice. Any surface marks ultra fine, wispy and faint as seen under bright light. This has no penetrating stylus marks and retains a lovely fresh shine. Clearly little used and certainly never abused, finding these vintage Floyd albums so fresh and attractive is getting very hard indeed, and visually, it should please many, if not most fans and collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [Equipment used: Pro-Ject X2 B Turntable, Ortofon MC X30 moving coil cartridge, Pro-Ject DS3 B Phono Preamp, Naim SuperNait 2 and Spendor A7 floorstanding speakers.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading:  This fantastic album plays even above its high visual grading with little, if anything of note to fault – it was a delight to play this copy again. And the only reason its for sale is I got a first press stereo copy quite recently. Truly wonderful sound, the stereo separation and details played on my system were a delight. Strongly recommended, it should please many, if not most collectors again.





The record has been professionally cleaned on my German-made Nessie vinyl record cleaning machine.

The record will always be removed from the main cover and placed inside a soft-lined white inner to avoid edge splits in transit. Then put inside a protective plastic sleeve.

It will be posted for UK delivery via a Royal Mail tracked service. More expensive albums will be posted Special Delivery. The price will be £4.50.
