There is little point purchasing any Pink Floyd unless it's practically perfect. And on original close-to-the-master vinyl, of course, because with Floyd even the silences are part of the music. You don't need any background intrusion. So here is a beautiful and very early UK example of the band's 1970 opus Atom Heart Mother on thick pressing Harvest (SHVL 781). This is truly a perfectly flat and near flawless slab of thick quality vinyl with first pressing 1G/1G matrices and mother stampers of 1-PH and 1-PL - incredibly early. The pressing also features the continual dripping tap sound effect at the end of Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast. The album plays wonderfully all the way through, with the snap, crackle, pop and sizzle of Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast intentional, of course. Atom Heart Mother is a wonderful piece of music and one of my favourites from the Floyd canon (I was lucky enough to see the band trialling the piece live when I were a whippersnapper!) This disc looks flawless, even when examined under harsh halogen lighting, and delivers the music wonderfully. With both labels near perfect and showing only the slightest sign of spindle activity (and certainly no wear), the disc easily grades EX.

Here is also a fine example of this vulnerable unlaminated gatefold cover which so often succumbs to mishandling. This iconic first pressing gatefold (only the earliest copies carry the patent serial number, as shown in my pictures) has clearly been very well looked after over the last 40 years and is strong with all straight edges, no rips or sticker tears and hardly any rubbing. There is just the slightest wear on the spine, though the text is clear and well readable. This sleeve easily grades EX-.
