Pink Floyd : The Dark Side Of The Moon A/B 1st Press EOP-80778 (Japan) Harvest Odeon w/ OBI & Booklet

This original first pressing from Japan plays to an incredible standard with only very minimal intrusion and this is detailed below.  The clarity and depth and the power and warmth of the audio is stunning!  It is well documented that the Japanese pressings match up to the UK first pressings in terms of sonic quality and I have no reason to doubt that now.  S1 is breath-taking and S2 is not far behind with only minimal background on the 'Us And Them' intro.  This vinyl really has a deep, rich and dynamic sound quality and you would be hard pressed to find a better one!

The gatefold is in excellent condition with only minimal wear and the original Obi (with the correct Y2000 price) remains in great order.  The original 32 page lyric / photo booklet is also in superb condition and only one poster is included, the concert one.  No stickers are included sadly.

This first pressing has the Y2000 price on both the Obi and the inside of the gatefold and it also has 'Toshiba Musical Industries Ltd...' around the perimeter of the label.

Visual description

The vinyl is in excellent condition and still has a very strong glossy sheen with no marks or scratches.  S1 is visually stunning with barely a hairline - S2 has a few more but they are still faint and can only be seen under a bright light.  The solid blue labels are unmarked and have hardly any spindle wear.

Play grading

The run in on S1 has no background and then the heartbeat intro on 'Speak To Me' plays with amazing clarity and just one minor static before the 'voice' comes in.  I have never heard such clarity during this section, you can hear every subtle shift in the music, and it builds perfectly.  I will grade as Mint- but I think I would be forgiven if the minus was left off!

The segue into 'Breathe In The Air' is faultless and during the entire intro I noticed only one mega quiet static tick.  The first verse is nigh on perfect with only a couple of barely audible statics and the depth and warmth of the music is just incredible.  I've heard good things about the Japanese first pressing of this classic but I didn't think it would be this good!  It continues in the same precise way and if anything the second verse is even better.  Mint- is deserved here.

'On The Run' plays with remarkable precision and no interference.  Ok a couple of ultra quiet statics on the intro but as I often say I mention any background even if very quiet and totally non-intrusive which this is.  From start to finish it plays with stunning depth and resonance and as for the 'crash' and running man sequence well it just could not 'play' any better.  The clarity is again incredible and you can hear every step and breath so clearly.  Again I have to grade as Mint- but it really could not play any better.

The segue into 'Time' is flawless and the clocks chime perfectly!  There are a couple of light ticks right after but then the 'metronome' section plays with metronomic consistency you could say!  There is no other background, the playback is faultless, and Gilmour's opening vocal is just as clean.  Wright's vocal is equal to that and then Gilmour's solo plays with great power and if there is any distortion it is kept to an absolute minimum.  The final vocal section has no interference and overall I will grade this classic as Near Mint although that could be considered a little harsh maybe!

'Breathe Reprise' plays with imperious quality and there is literally nothing to detract from the audio.  It is Mint in every way.

The gentle piano intro on 'The Great Gig In The Sky' plays beautifully with no intrusion and there is only a modicum of barely audible static during the 'spoken' section.  Torry's classic vocal then plays with a power and definition that can only be described as stunning, there is no interference or distortion.  The following quieter passage plays so clearly with no intrusion and the closing section has only a handful of mega quiet statics.  I believe Mint- is a fair assessment of the audio here, it is a superb version.

The familiar intro on 'Money' is faultless and as Waters' classic bass line comes in the playback is just as good.  The opening vocal section is 'as new' and I have to say Gilmour's vocal here is very strong and very much reverberates around the room!  Great sonic quality.  The mid instrumental is of the same high end standard.  The clarity and power is undiminished and it just demands to be played loud!  The playback is phenomenal through every section with no interference of any kind and the final verse is just as impressive.  In all my years listening and listing this classic album I have never heard a version better than this and I to grade it as Mint and that includes the spoken end section.

The quiet intro on 'Us And Them' has barely any static and only a small number of dull ticks which are only very quiet.  There are a couple of static ticks / clicks just before the sax comes in but they are not loud.  It then plays very clearly with only a couple of minor statics and the first vocal has no background whatsoever.  The first 'chorus' is flawless and from then on plays with sublime clarity and depth.  There are no issues here - the instrumental section is 'as new' and the final verse / chorus is just as clean.  I will grade the intro section as Ex but it is easily Mint- from then onwards.

'Any Colour You Like' plays with impeccable quality throughout with no interference.  No ticks, clicks, pops or static and Mint is again correct.

The intro on 'Brain Damage' has only a couple of barely audible statics and the opening vocal is perfect.  The second verse is so 'clean' and as it builds the power and depth of the audio is superb!  The rest of this classic plays with genuine quality - very strong vocals and audio definition cannot be faulted.  Mint-

Another segue another perfect one!  The final track 'Eclipse' plays with a rich dynamic quality from the get go and it does not let up as it continues.  This is a phenomenal version - the power is tangible and there is no distortion - wow what a version!  A hint of mega light static at the beginning of the final heartbeat section and then plays with wonderful clarity and only 3/4 very quiet dull ticks.  Can't really fault it though, a very strong Mint- conclusion.

In summary this first Japanese pressing plays to a very high standard with very little background.  The only 'real' intrusion is at the beginning of 'Us And Them' but even then it is quiet and kept to an absolute minimum.  I've just played that section back again and the majority of it is a lot better than Ex but of course I have to give an overall grade.  As for the rest of the album - stunning basically!  It has such a strong dynamic sound and the clarity, depth and warmth is just off the scale.  As stated they certainly match the UK first pressings in terms of sonic quality and I am confident the winning bidder will appreciate it as much as I have done!

The Gatefold, Obi, 32 Page Booklet, Poster & Inner

The cover is in excellent condition with only minimal wear.  The edges have no rubbing and the spine is in superb order with no wear also.  Only the right hand corners have minor rubbing and the opening edge is pristine.  The front cover is super clean with only mild rubbing on the outside edge and the back cover is stunning.  The inside of the gatefold is in lovely condition without any marking.

As can be seen the original Obi strip still fits perfectly around the cover.  The 'front' of the Obi is perfect and only the top part on the inside has some creasing, no rips or tears though.  A small number of faint spots on the lower section.  The lyric / photo booklet is in great condition with only minimal creasing and the concert poster is 'as new'.  The original pvc inner sleeve is in excellent condition as you would expect.

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping.  This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage.  The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered.  Any over-payment will always be refunded.

The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD).  An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known.  Because of this I will sometimes have to estimate the cost and this will be shown in the listing.  Please wait for the invoice before making payment and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.  Many thanks.

All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection.  They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection.  I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.

The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each.  There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up!  Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
