Label/Format: Harvest – Early pressed example that includes ‘The Gramophone Company Limited’ text next to the album title and similarly, on the rim. Later pressings changed this rim text to EMI credits.

Label Conditions: Clean, fresh and attractive with only very light and few spindle marks and no wear around the hole.

Cat Number: SHSP 4020.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 114 grams. A little below average.

Rarity: Moderate in theory but clean copies that play well and include a lovely, little worn rounded corner cover are far less easy to find. Also, this copy has a Garrod & Lofthouse cover made with a different style of card which I have never seen before. It came from a rep’s collection that included several other strange variants. Instead of having a textured or somewhat rough finish, this cover has a smooth finish which makes it look sharper and feel quite different. An unusual alternative cover that is likely to appeal to specialist Pink Floyd collectors – also in very fine condition.

Brief Info: Pink Floyd’s seventh album and one of their finest. This was music from the motion picture ‘La Vallée. Including both vocal and instrumental tracks, all new and band-written, this could just as easy be a Pink Floyd album with no reference to film music, there are NO dull filler tracks and Rick Wright’s haunting keyboards are still utilised fully. I still consider this to be a somewhat underrated album, but most Floyd fans love it.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better still. An unlaminated single format with SMOOTH, untextured surfaces and the rounded corners. Still with a matt finish and silky smooth to the fingertip. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd and was designed by Hipgnosis. I have never seen this particular finish on this cover before, every one I have seen with rounded corners have been textured. It looks different and feels different too, an interesting one for sure.

Cover Front & Back: Both sides clean and fresh looking with only gentle traces of rim impression with barely any rubbing. Any creases are edge types that are fine, few and faint. Any marks are equally few and faint as seen with close scrutiny under angled light. Both sides incredibly smooth and again, I have never seen one like this before. It appears Garrod & Lofthouse made this cover on a totally different type of card, it will certainly be far rarer than the standard textured version for sure.

Top Edge: Very thin, clean and crisp with barely any wear at all.

Bottom Edge: Similar with a little faint rubbing near the ends. Any thickening to the circled corner light. Both top and bottom are very straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with any thickening or burring minuscule. Record entered on this right edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: A superb spine, that also looks a little different. Solid, straight, quite thin with barely any compression. The lack of rubbing is quite unusual and the fragile text is fully present and unworn and even well centred. The ends are tapered in manufacture and around 1.5 inches long. These fragile areas are crisp and very neat.

Corners: These round corners are all undamaged with any thickening or rubbing very light indeed. So often these thicken considerably, get bent and feather.

Cover Summary: An impressive example of this somewhat delicate 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. It really does look and feel different to the norm and again, this could be a significant variant for Floyd collectors. This attractive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): this includes an EMI text white unlined inner in super condition. Barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and fairly solidly pressed. A couple of visible surface lines on side one, but totally superficial with NO sound whatsoever. Then under bright angled light, some ultra fine and faint whispy surface traces are just visible. Overall, a nice record that should please many collectors but not the visual perfectionists.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Floyd classic plays even above its high visual grading with very little to fault at all. In fact it is one of the cleanest copies I have heard. A title I often find that crackles, this too on the cleanest looking copies, even very first ones. It offers super, totally distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear. Sound quality is impressively high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound – a typically Floyd hi-fi recording that will sound stunning on any worthy equipment. Any surface sounds minimal and faint, no pops and just the odd gentle sporadic tick that is so difficult to avoid totally as this has some very quiet passages. It offers utmost detail, dynanics and quality presentation of the music and any mostly light visual blemishes are ignored. Few available examples will match or outperform this quality pressing I feel sure. Nothing really spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful album, the sound punchy, precise and sharp – a real delight really. This copy could prove very difficult to find significantly better and again can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
