THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN : 1st MONO PRESSING
On offer here is a very rare first mono pressing of the The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn. What makes this even rarer is that it has no "File under Popular : Pop Groups" on the top right part of the flipback, it is left blank. Only the early pressings didn't have this making this LP extremely collectible. As can be seen from the photos there is writing/doodling on the back cover although I was surprised at the quality of the audio considering the hairlines and the fact that the vinyl is almost 50 years old! Being a first pressing it also has the famous blue/black Columbia label. A comprehensive grading is given below.

Visual grading
There are various hairlines and fine scratches on this vinyl but they do not overly affect the audio. It remains in very good condition and lies perfectly flat on my turntable. It is very rare to find one of these in anything but very good condition and being a mono pressing makes it extremely rare of course. I honestly believe a keen Floyd fan would be happy with this LP if they take into account my honest grading.
Play grading I played this mono record through my stereo system so this obviously has to be taken into account.
Whilst there is crackle throughout I was still surprised to hear how good Side One sounded. You can also hear some distortion here and there but there are also many sections where there is very little background interference. As stated there are numerous hairlines and some fine scratches but I did not find the static/crackle particularly obtrusive and it plays without any loud pops or jumps which is quite something on a record of this age.
'Interstellar Overdrive' on Side Two does have two small skips right at the beginning. Thereafter it plays with a fair amount of crackle and a few clicks but again is still more than playable and would probably sound better on a mono system. In fact I would say the second half of the track plays better than the preceding half. 'The Gnome' plays with relatively little interference. The audio here has excellent clarity and the faint static definitely does not mar the enjoyment of this track. 'Chapter 24' plays with a little more crackle but again is perfectly listenable! The remaining two tracks play very well but with some crackle although not loud.
In summary for its age this O1/O1 first mono pressing plays very well considering the hairlines. It is worth noting that there are only two small skips on the entire playback which is quite something. Yes there is some distortion and crackle but it is a more than playable vinyl when you take into account its rarity and I for one was quite surprised just how good the audio was.
Laminated cover
The laminated Ernest J. Day flipback cover is relatively clean so it is a shame that there is some writing and doodling on the back cover. As can be seen two names have been written plus on the tracklisting the first three have been filled in with blue pen. Apart from that the actual flipbacks are in excellent condition for nearly 50 years old. So many are stained badly but these are not, they just have a 4/5 small creases. The edges and thin pinched spine are in excellent shape. The opening edge does show a fair amount of handling wear which is hardly surprising and there are a few creases on the laminated front cover although nothing major.
As stated before there is no 'File under Popular : Pop Groups' on the top right flipback making this a very rare cover indeed. The mono catalogue number SX 6157 is shown just below the top right flipback. Whilst it is has been "well used" this mono cover remains in very good condition despite the pen marks.
Labels
The blue/black labels are in excellent condition with only some minor spindle wear. The letters K and T are stamped on either side of the spindle hole on Side Two denoting that tax was paid for this album. At the bottom of the label it states "Made in Gt. Britain" and around the edge "The Gramophone Co., Ltd. All rights of the manufacturer and of the owner of the recorded work reserved. Unauthorised public performance, broadcasting, and copying of this record prohibited".
Inner sleeve
The original inner sleeve is also included and has the reddish brown printing on cream coloured paper advertising "Piper" and "Sgt Peppers" amongst others. It is in excellent shape with no splits or tears, just minor creasing and a few small age related marks. Play tested on my Technics SL-J110R turntable system
