Description
Easily the rarest stereo version of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, this is the rare 1969 one box label WITH the 'Sold in the UK . . .' text and the original E.J. Day cover. This was the last pressing to have an E.J. Day cover (with the original grey background on the rear) before printing moved to Garrod and Lofthouse and the background colour changed to white.
Columbia only used this label design for a couple of months in the second half of 1969 and it is believed that only a few hundred copies exist.
This rare pressing is not to be confused with the much more common one box label WITHOUT the 'Sold in the UK . . .' text, which was used for nearly two years between 1969 and 1971 (when the second EMI box was added), and which comes in a Garrod and Lofthouse cover.
This has the following matrix numbers:
Side one: YAX 3419-1
Side two: YAX 3420-1
Vinyl: The vinyl has retained its original sheen with just some fine hairlines and sleeve removal marks on each side, but there's nothing significant anywhere. I would visually grade it around Excellent (Ex). I have played the whole thing and it sounds superb, with just some minor background noise in the run-ins/outs, fades, silent grooves and intros and the occasional random click, but there is nothing loud or intrusive anywhere.
Cover: There are some creases around the edges and corners, mainly near the opening, but overall I'd say that this is in remarkable condition considering that it is 52 years old.
