Description
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn SCX 6157
This is a stunning very early stereo pressing of this 1967 classic debut from Pink Floyd and has the black Columbia label with the white Columbia logo. It also has the original laminated flipback cover. As detailed below the audio is absolutely stunning for a vinyl now approaching 50 years old.

Visual grading
It is remarkably clean when you factor in the age of this vinyl. There are a couple of very small marks and a handful of faint hairlines but they do not affect the audio at all. There is not very much spindle wear which suggests it has only been lightly played. It is such a rarity to find an early pressing in this condition when you consider how much they were generally played in the late 60s. It also lies perfectly flat on the turntable.
Play grading
This is one of the best versions of 'Astronomy Domine' I have ever heard. There is minimal lead in static and it then plays with such amazing clarity and depth and no interference whatsoever. In a word, stunning! If that wasn't enough 'Lucifer Sam' then plays with the same quality. The remaining tracks again have no crackle and I cannot stress just how good this audio is! There is a touch of distortion here and there but as any Floyd fan knows this is especially common with this LP. There is also complete silence between tracks which gives a good indication of the quality on offer here. It goes without saying that there are no clicks, pops or jumps on this side.
Again there is minimal lead in static on Side Two. 'Interstellar Overdrive' then plays superbly well, yes with a little distortion but no unwanted background noise. 'The Gnome' plays with stunning clarity with perhaps just a touch of static but I only mention this to be thorough in my grading, it still sounds superb! A little background static again during 'Chapter 24' but again not intrusive in any way. Without sounding repetitious both 'The Scarecrow' and 'Bike' play with high end quality and no interference again.
In summary I would say this is the best early stereo pressing of 'Piper' I have heard. The clarity and separation and sonic quality of every track is just breathtaking and when you consider the age of the vinyl it is just so rare to find one in this condition. Any Floyd aficionado would be more than happy with the audio quality here. A fantastic piece of Floyd history.
Laminated cover
The laminated Ernest J. Day flipback cover is in excellent condition with only minor wear. It does have some creasing on the front cover but the laminate remains intact with no splits or lifting. The edges and thin pinched spine are in superb condition with no wear and it is only the corners that have some rubbing. The opening edge has been carefully handled and has no real wear. The back cover is grey and the flipbacks are in excellent shape and only have minimal staining around them. There is a little ringwear on the reverse but there are no marks or writing anywhere.
Being a very early stereo pressing it has 'File under POPULAR' on the top right flipback with the catalogue number SCX 6157 below it. Overall a very clean flipback cover with only minor shelf wear.
Labels
The black Columbia with silver text are in wonderful shape with only a little spindle wear as stated. The tax letters K and T do not appear on this pressing.
The text around the bottom of the label states "Made in Gt. Britain" and around the top edge "The Gramophone Co., Ltd. All rights of the manufacturer and of the owner of the recorded work reserved. Unauthorised public performance, broadcasting, and copying of this record prohibited".
Inner sleeve
This does not have the original EMI sleeve unfortunately and has a plain white die-cut inner sleeve instead with Patent No 1,125,55 and Made in England printed on it. Play tested on my Technics SL-J110R turntable system
