Label Conditions: Both immaculate: both unmarked with no spindle marks, never easy for one of rock’s most popular bands. The sound-check matched with a superbly pressed record that has very little to fault. Again difficult as t his album has numerous quiet passages.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 105 grams. Not untypically light for another album that was pressed in considerable numbers.

Rarity: Moderate: although not selling in the numbers of the previous ‘giant’ Floyd albums, this still hit the top spot in the UK, although American sales were vastly down on past titles. The important factor as always is condition. So often this has unwanted surface noise, but this one offers lovely crackle-free sound and this example looks hardly even played. Any little used or barely run-in Pink Floyd album are scarcer.

Brief Info: The final Pink Floyd album to feature Roger Waters, and the considerable skills of keyboard player Richard Wright are absent. In fact it can be argued this is more like a Roger Waters solo album than a full band effort as he is the only member credited with the song writing and performs most-all of the vocals. It received very mixed reviews on issue but still went to No. 1 on the UK album chart. Sales in the USA were far lower than anticipated. A very downbeat concept album about war and a very personal album by Waters. An album that does grow on you with a few plays, but it will never be a major-league Floyd album for me anyway – but of course an essential album for fans and few will be better this superbly preserved example. This one appears hardly even played and all elements of the set are in lovely clean condition. A typically difficult and challenging album for vinyl with many very quiet passages, this has little unwanted bar a tiny few very faint ticks. The lack of crackle and pressing issues are always the best news possible for what was still a mass-produced record.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): this being somewhat critical and Mint(–) could be justified. An unlaminated gatefold format with fairly shiny varnished surfaces. The front has the band and title sticker. Printed and made in England and includes the black inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Practically unworn being fresh, clean with lovely shine. The odd friction rub hint near the top being critical under light. The sticker is impressive and hardly marked and certainly never removed.

Cover Back: Little short of as-made, this one with NO bar code.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Immaculate, unworn.

Top Edges: Both unworn and very straight.

Bottom Edges: Practically the same, super-fine rub trace near the right corner being critical.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both very clean, ultra sharp with barely any hint of wear. Record enters on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: A super spine: solid, straight with no compression, also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. A mere hint of left tilt being critical. All text is perfect and unworn and even the hinge folds are unrubbed or worn.

Corners: Any rip rubbing is tiny and light. All retain near perfect shape.

Cover Summary: An impressive all-round example of this well-known 1980’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: PRACTICALLY MINT: as made. A solid black polylined inner with a little natural crinkle but little else, this is little short of immaculate and unaged. No hard creases and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This has the tiny lilac ‘PATENT’ on the back flipback side near the bottom left corner.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: PRACTICALLY MINT: a grading I will rarely contemplate using even if records merit it. Probably played no more than a couple of three times including myself for my mandatory sound check as I take nothing for granted. An album I know very well since buying a copy on issue and I know pressing quality can be an issue. This plays beautifully with very little nothing unwanted. Visually immaculate with impressive shine, freshness and hardly blemishes playing surfaces of labels. The grooves in places incredibly fine and compact on the quiet passages, so the odd faint tick is close to impossible to avoid totally, but the lack of pressing rasps and crackle are major pluses. A copy to please most fans and collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This visually and quality pressed record plays up to it’s high visual grading with very little unwanted. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is immensely high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A typical super-fidelity Pink Floyd album, that was never about to change and this pressing does it high justice. Barely even a trace of surface sound with any ticks few and very faint indeed – I consider compact disc silence a near impossibility on such records – that being purely realistic, especially when played on such revealing equipment as listed in detail further down. Few available copies will match, let alone outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Hardly played with all elements of the album impressive, it should please most collectors.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
