Release date: August 1967 (UK IMMEDIATE Release date: 16 June 1967).  Recording date: May 1967.

On offer here is an ULTRA RARE original AUSTRALIAN SUNSHINE issue of “Black Sheep R.I.P.” single by THE PLAYBOYS.  The A-side is a PSYCHEDELIC FREAKOUT re-working of the children’s nursery rhyme under a slightly revised title, while the original BRIAN PEACOCK composed flipside “Sad“, is regarded by many collectors as a FREAKBEAT CLASSIC.  Be sure to check out the YouTube links below!

After Normie Rowe failed to become the mega-star in Britain that he was back here, his backing group The Playboys decide to stay on in the Old Dart for a while and try their luck.  The band managed to get themselves signed for one single with ex-Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog-Oldham’s Immediate record label – and the resultant 45 was a two-song corker!

“Black Sheep R.I.P.” is a trippy re-writing of the traditional “Baa-Baa Black Sheep” nursery rhyme, augmented by military beats, stately organ lines and fine harmonies, before signing off with a surprise ‘rave-up’ ending.  On the B-side “Sad”, The Playboys pulled out all the psychedelic stops.  Bassist Brian Peacock (ex-NZ Librettos) wrote both sides of the single and had a great ear for the dreamy pop sound that was enveloping the British scene at the time of this release.  Pop art feedback-soaked guitars courtesy of Mick Rodgers, bizarre time signature changes and lush multi-layered harmonies make “Sad” a freakbeat/psychedelic treasure.  Killer Moment “Sad”: 01.54, that stray feedback squeal.
