This album finds the perfect middle ground between the band's earlier power/reggae rock and their later Sting-dominated sophisticated pop. This album may not have the eccentric rough edges of their previous work, but it works in the band's favor to highlight their ability to subtly decorate Sting's elaborate lyrics and vocals with virtuosic arrangements. Sting's great bass work and minimal keyboard textures click with Stewart Copeland's talented skitterish accenting to propel the songs. Andy Summers' guitar echoes and shimmers, the sound that became the '80's pop standard. That he can counteract his clean rhythm playing with rockish avant-garde guitar solos in "Driven To Tears", "Bombs Away", and "Shadows In The Rain" shows his diverse abilities. Their production had already been of a very high quality, and this time it showcases the playing and the songs equally from beginning to end.

In this case, Sting's two big hits are just the tip of the iceberg, but they show his songwriting finesse growing with the eerily- textured "Don't Stand So Close To Me" and the deceptively-titled "De Do Do Do". However, the jazzy social-criticism of "Driven To Tears", the appropriately mundane funk of "When The World Is Running Down", the mocking ska of "Canary in a Coalmine", and the more stir-crazy than perky "Man In A Suitcase" are all very animated and catchy as well.

Andy Summers chips in with a spooky little prog-rock instrumental "Behind My Camel". And Stewart Copeland contributes a similarly Middle-Eastern themed "Bombs Away", and it's a great pop song. Unlike his previous offbeat vocal work, he employs the help of Sting for all the lead vocals which makes this a subversively hit-worthy tune. But Copeland's impact goes well beyond his two songs (including the textured new-wave instrumental "The Other Way of Stopping"). Some of his best and most dynamic drumming can be found here, highlighted by the R&B-like grooves he lays down with Sting on "Voices Inside My Head" and "Shadows in the Rain", which are amazing and hypnotizing. His innovative and adventurous rhythms keep the music from ever even slightly approaching the blandness that is now Sting.
