MONO VINYL 1ST PRESSING OF BLUE NOTE HOLY GRAIL!
Hardly ever seen in UK auctions is this beautiful MONO FIRST PRESSING of Pete La Roca's one and only Blue Note album, the post-bop classic, Basra (Blue Note BLP 4205). This is a one-time opportunity to get your hands on an incredibly scarce and desirable title in the Blue Note 4000 vinyl range, complete with Plastylite ear! A great combination of stellar musicianship and wonderful sound (one of Rudy Van Gelder's finest recordings) - original Mono is the only way to hear this! I have fully play-tested the vinyl, so my grading is based on how the record actually sounds, as well as how it looks.
Vinyl is strictly graded in Very Good condition - I will deal with audio & visual separately, as it's a classic example of a Blue Note mono record playing better than it looks! Audio is borderline Very Good+, with the main downmarks being a bit of background crackle in quieter moments, and a couple of nicks/scratches which each result in a number of audible ticks during the playback (at the start of side 1 track 2, and in the bass solo intro at the start of side 2 track 1) - but most of the time it's all about the incredibly powerful music, and I'd say the majority of the record plays substantially better than this grade - Lazy Afternoon, the quietest song on here, is rendered beautifully. All characteristics of the first Mono pressing are present (VAN GELDER stamp, ear on both sides, NY USA on labels etc.) Having played the album in full, it sounds punchy and loud throughout, being another Rudy Van Gelder special! Visually, the record is Very Good as there are various marks & scuffs on the vinyl (as shown in the photos), but the majority of these have minimal detectable audio impact that I could hear.
The laminated, dimpled cover is strictly graded in Very Good- condition, due to scuffed spine & edges (the bottom edge having been taped up by a previous owner), some discolouring on the rear, and writing at the top of the back cover (the name & address of what I assume to be the original owner of the vinyl - US artist Tom McKinney, who is documented online as having a jazz vinyl collection) - each of which can be seen in the photos. It goes without saying that it's one of the all-time great BN cover designs.

Note that I separate the vinyl from the outer sleeve for postage to prevent seam splits. I use thick cardboard stiffeners and take great care in my packaging to ensure as far as possible that these records reach their destination in exactly the same condition as when they leave me, and in the way I'd like to receive them.
