Description
Original US mono version of Pink Floyd’s mind-boggling debut album The Piper At The Gates of Dawn. Features a different track list than the UK version—and unlike the UK version this one includes “See Emily Play.”
This is an album where the mono version matters—it’s an entirely different and IMHO superior and more powerful mix. In particular “Interstellar Overdrive” is improved tremendously by (a) increased presence of Richard Wright’s organ in the intro and (b) loss of the rather gimmicky stereo panning.
People used to warn me, “Pink Floyd’s first album is really out there. It’s not like Dark Side, it’s weird.” They were saying to stay away. Thank God I didn’t listen to them.
Condition: I grade everything visually according to the Goldmine standard conservatively applied, the way people used to do it before vinyl got big again. Under that standard, this grades visually at VG vinyl / VG+ cover. That said, I gave the whole thing a spin the other night and it plays better than that. The sound is rich and there is only a little bit of crackling in the quieter passages.
