Description
An original and true 1st pressing of UMMA on the UK Harvest label. Matrix A1/B2/A1/B2. Stampers 1-GD/1-RA/1-RD/2-RD. Please note the label perimeter mentions Gramophone, and the label DO NOT exhibit an EMI logo [indicative of 1st issue]. But within this batch of early copies there are SUPER EARLY copies - the 1st to roll off the press. And what you need to look for is the side 4 label which exhibits a typo 'The GAND Vizier's Party'..they missed out the 'R'. This is absolute proof of very earliest pressing. The vinyl comes housed in an original G&L gatefold cover. Now, on the early 1st issue covers there's another identifying mark of the first print run...The cover mentions that it was printed in 'Londen' - a misspelling. Also included are both original generic white inners with patent information. So, this is the genuine full 1st package and it is complete.
Vinyl (Ex/Ex+) In super condition and has clearly only seen the lightest of use. Under close inspection I can't make out more than a couple of very fine marks per side - nothing remotely or vaguely close to being concerning. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly EXCELLENT+ level of playback with a couple of minor deviations. Don't know about you but I think Ummagumma is possibly the fussiest title in the whole of the Floyd catalogue..and that's really saying something. 'Grantchester Meadows'? It's mostly birdsong and acoustic guitar.. but thankfully plays as clean as a whistle. There's so much low-key noodling ... and then the tapping of a cymbal, or someone whacking away at the strings of a grand piano! 'Set Your Control For The Heart of the Sun' anyone? This track is insanely fussy...But, thankfully, this copy has clearly been very carefully looked after and is preserved much much better than what usually surfaces at 1st pressing. I certainly don't ever recall hearing a quieter, and importantly, consistently quiet playing copy. It send shivers down your spine in parts...Firstly the audio is very high quality. It's clearly close to those original masters, and thanks to minimal use, nearly all of that original audio is intact. I'll detail the very minor deviations that I could pick up... "Set Your Controls" - the uber fussy TEST track.. I picked up two very-light ticks in the opening passage and then a couple of crackles in the occasional spot... In 'Saucerful' I detected two isolated light ticks and then again in Sysyphus. But to be honest, even these tracks, the audio is still very high quality... way way better than what you usually tend to find. Overall, and across four sides, a supremely well preserved and clean playing true 1st press.
Cover (Ex) A very solid looking cover not like many of the beleaguered 1st issues you can find. Very nice shiny flat front and back without muted colours, and only one thumbnail crease either side. The interior looks great with only one spot of slight wear over on the right side. Edge wear is very light for this title and the openings are still sharpish. The spine is 100% intact and doesn't seem to have suffered compression like many examples can do. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity and remains a terrific looking original example.
Inners (Ex) Very lightest ageing. No marks or splitting.
