Description
You are bidding for a unique item of rock history, a piece of the original artwork from Procol Harum's Grand Hotel classic album from 1973.
This stylishly mysterious illustration, by renowned designer Spencer Zahn, has been offered for auction by Procol's Gary Brooker, MBE, the sale proceeds to go to the BJ Wilson Memorial Fund, and to continue the running of 'Beyond the Pale', the Procol Harum website. This is the very last in the series and we are offering it at a low starting-price; after this we have no more Grand Hotel artwork to offer to collectors.
In the original booklet it illustrated the words of the mildly scurrilous song A Souvenir of London, by Keith Reid. The picture shows a fractured, minimalist parcel from which fluid has been 'leaking out'; the source of the smaller, discontinuous patch of liquid is one of the piece's many enigmas.
The dimensions of the picture, measured by Mr Brooker himself, are 748 x 842 mm. The artwork has been executed in charcoal on Rives BFK Elephant double weight paper. It has been fixed to prevent smudging, and has spent most of the past thirty years under glass: it is being sold unmounted, and will be rolled in a stout tube for postage to the lucky winner.
Click on this link to inspect large photographs of the piece, and satisfy yourself of the condition it is in, and to spot where the paper shows signs of age.
Suitably framed, this attractive piece of original artwork will make a sparkling conversation piece, and will be a marvellous addition to the collection of any lover of all things English.
