'A Day At The Races'
EMI, UK, 1976
EMTC 104
CLEARLY THE bands crowning glory up to this point was previous album 'A Night At The Opera'. Sure it included 'Bohemian Rhapsody' but that's was almost incidental to the album as a whole with the band introducing a sense of grandiosity that totally eclipsed early efforts hammering home a new message of bigger and fatter is best. This maxim was continued with 'A Day At The Races', the band not giving into taking the easy path - far from it in fact. Produced by the band having dispensed with Roy Thomas Baker, the emphasis is on precision and perfection. One can only imagine the hours spent agonising over every note and vocal line, the furrowed brows as they hunched over the recording desk and the note by note construction of some songs.
Yes, every track is pretty much mind blowing from the opening hard rock salvo of 'Tie Your Mother Down', Brian May going ballistic on this one, through the gaiety of 'The Millionaire Waltz' and 'Good Old Fashion Lover Boy', the intensity of 'Somebody To Love' and the utterly spellbinding 'Teo Torriatle' with its Japanese lyrics.
This is a beautiful copy with only minimal evidence of ever being played. You'll be hard pressed to find better.
Pressing: EMI, UK, 1976
Vinyl: Super clean and shiny condition. Virtually no signs of use - I would say no more than 2 or 3 plays. Grades as top Nr. archive MINT-!
Cover: Again, virtually no signs of use. Issued in a beautifully illustrated gatefold cover. By virtue of the fact that its a predominantly black finish, these covers are impossible to find in nice condition. This one is about as good as it gets - no blemishes, no dirt marks, no fingerprint/ageing, no storage wear and no grubbiness. Sharp corners, no dings, no bends, no ring wear and no split seams. Spine is stiff, straight and totally uncrushed. Grades as archive MINT-!
Inserts: Original thick cardboard inner sleeve
