ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful and rare 2LP box set from Dynamic (DS 4017/18, Italian pressings, black/silver label, stereo, booklet included) features truly unsurpassed performances of Nicolò Paganini's Quartets for Violin, Viola, Cello, and Guitar Nos. 10 through 13, brought off with immense technical refinement, verve, and charm by the Quartetto Paganini, a lovely album recorded in Genoa in September 1981 and first issued in 1982 to mark the Paganini Bicentenary.
The Paganini Quartet was comprised of:
Bruno Pignata, violin
Lorenzo Lugli, viola
Paola Mosca, cello
Pino Briasco, guitar
The exact contents are as follows, all works by Paganini:
Quartet No. 10 in A Major
Quartet No. 11 in B Major
Quartet No. 12 in A minor
Quartet No. 13 in F Major
Included is a full-size 8-page booklet with extensive notes on the music by Edward Neill, as well as a brief biography of the Quartetto Paganini by Alma Brughera Capaldo – all texts printed in Italian and English.
Incidentally, the front page of the booklet is inscribed by guitarist Pino Briasco.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the box is EXCELLENT. There is slight wear at corners and faint shelfwear, but that is all. There are no corner breaks, seamsplits, owners' markings, bends, or other defects, and the box remains solid, bright, glossy, and handsome – a fine collector's copy.
The condition of the booklet is VERY GOOD. The booklet does show some handling, but is free of marks, tears, or other defects – a very good copy.
The condition of the 2 LPs is near-MINT throughout. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), really these are very fine copies and playback is truly superb across all 4 sides. However, if you must have absolutely perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this set. Overall, these rate as truly fine collector's copies.
