RADIO SERIES: DICK ORKIN'S 'CHICKENMAN RETURNS', 7 LPs/COMPLETE, AFRTS PRESSING, VG+/EX

Created by legendary radio producer and voice actor Dick Orkin, The Adventures of Chickenman debuted in 1966 on Chicago's WCFL and quickly became one of the most successful syndication phenomena in radio history. Born as a parody of the campy 1960s Batman television series, the daily, two-minute serial chronicled the underwhelming exploits of Benton Harbor, a mild-mannered shoe salesman who spent his weekends fighting crime in a homemade yellow chicken suit. Operating out of his mother's basement and utilizing his "Chicken-Cave," the "White-Winged Warrior" was notoriously incompetent, usually causing more bureaucratic headache for the cynical city officials at Central Police Headquarters than he ever did for actual criminals. Orkin voiced the title character with a perfect blend of earnestness and nasal anxiety, relying on brilliant deadpan dialogue and low-tech, repetitive sound effects to sell the mundane absurdity of the world.

The show was an overnight sensation, eventually expanding into more than 1,500 daily episodes that were syndicated to over 3,000 radio stations worldwide. Its signature, dramatic trumpet fanfare accompanied by the screech of "He's everywhere! He's everywhere!" became an instantly recognizable pop culture catchphrase across America. The serial was so universally beloved that it was famously broadcast to American troops overseas via the Armed Forces Radio Network during the Vietnam War, offering a welcome dose of home-cooked, satirical comfort. Running consistently throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, Chickenman didn't just cement Dick Orkin's reputation as a creative genius of the airwaves—it revolutionized short-form radio programming, proving that micro-targeted, character-driven comedy could captivate global audiences just as effectively as full-length network dramas.
