RADIO BROADCAST: THE GEORGE MICHAEL STORY & THE EDDIE MONEY STORY
George Michael:
Born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in London in 1963, George Michael rose from a teenage idol into one of the most successful and influential solo pop icons of the 1980s and 1990s. He first achieved widespread fame alongside high school friend Andrew Ridgeley in the pop duo Wham!, scoring massive international hits like "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" and the pop ballad "Careless Whisper." Launching a solo career to establish deeper creative independence, he released his blockbuster debut album Faith in 1987, which sold millions of copies worldwide and yielded chart-topping hits including the title track and "Father Figure." Renowned for his remarkably soulful vocal delivery, keen songwriting, and slick visual presentation, Michael dominated the airwaves, becoming a celebrated trailblazer in the music industry. He was formally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023, cementing his legacy as a definitive force in pop history.
Eddie Money:
Born Edward Joseph Mahoney in New York City in 1949, Eddie Money brought a distinctively blue-collar, straight-ahead energy to the landscape of American arena rock. The son of a New York City police officer, Money initially entered a police training program before pivoting to a music career and relocating to Berkeley, California, in the late 1960s to perform in local clubs. His raw talent caught the attention of legendary promoter Bill Graham, who helped him secure a deal with Columbia Records, resulting in a double-platinum 1977 eponymous debut album that featured the radio staples "Baby Hold On" and "Two Tickets to Paradise." Armed with a signature raspy, relatable howl, Money remained a mainstay on late-70s and 1980s radio, achieving a major commercial renaissance with his 1986 platinum record Can't Hold Back, which generated the hit "Take Me Home Tonight" and earned him a Grammy nomination. Renowned for his endless hustle and relentless summer touring schedules, Money was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame in 2008 as a true staple of classic rock radio.
These two one-hour specials cover George Michael & Eddie Money from their beginnings up until 1990 with interviews and musical rarities.
