RARE 1960's HMV GREAT CATHEDRAL ORGAN SERIES19 RECORDS

This is a superb and now very rare series of records, some on the old His Masters Voice Old Label, some on the EMI Label and some on the HMV/EMI Label.

 The collection of 19 superb records are from the Great Cathedral Organ Series and feature great organ performances from all the finest cathedral organs in this country. Each record features full information on the organ of each Cathedral.

The older records are recorded in mono, whilst the later are in stereo.

The first record on His Master's Voice Label dates from 1964, in mono and features a performance from  Liverpool Cathedral featuring Noel Rawsthorne. The works featured are Mozart's Fantasia In F Minor, Daquin's Noel No 6 In D Minor, Purcell's Two Trumpet Tunes And Air,  Karg- Elert Nun Danket Alle Gott, Vierne Berceuse (No 9 Of 24 Pieces In Freestyle ),  Whitlock Fanfare (No 4 of Four Extemporizations ), and Durufle's Toccata (Suite Op. 5 ).

The second record on His Master's Voice Label dates from 1964, in mono, features a performance from York Minster by Francis Jackson. The works featured are Nares Introduction And Fugue, Wesley's Air And Gavotte, Bossi Scerzo In G Minor,  Jackson's Diversion For Mixtures Cocker's Tuba tune and Healey Wilan Introduction Passacaglia And Fugue.

 The third record on the EMI/His Master's Voice dates from 1968, is in stereo, and features a performance from Westminster Cathedral  by Nicholas Kynaston. The works performed are Franck Chorale Nio 3 In A Minor, Franck Pastorale Op 19, Messian Combat De La Morte Et De La Vie and Vierne Carillon De Westminster.

The fourth record on the His Master's Voice/ emi Label dates from 1967 and features a performance from Norwich Cathedral by Heathcote Statham. The works performed are Bossi Entree Pontificale, Heathcote Statham Lament, J.S.Bach Fugue In D Minor (Dorian), Stanley Allegro, Dandrieu Musette, Clerambault Prelude, Handel Concerto No2 In B Flat 3RD Movement and Karg Elert Pastel No 3.

The fifth record on the His Master's Voice/ EMI Label dates from 1965 and features a performance from Gloucester Cathedral by Herbert Sumison. The works performed Wesley's Choral Song and Fugue, Elgar's Sonata No 1 In G Major First, Second, Third, and Fourth Movements, Herbert Howells Rhapsody Op 17 No 1 and Parry's Chorale Fantasia On O God Our Help, ( No1 Of Three Chorale Fantasias ).

The sixth record on the EMI Label dates from 1968 and features a performance from Worcester Cathedral  by Christopher Robinson and is in stereo. The works performed are J S Bach's Prelude And Fugue In C Major, Mendolsohnn's Sonata No 3 In A Major Peeter's Chorale Preludes O Gott, Du Frommer Gott, and Nun Ruhen Alle, Franck Piece Heroic and William Mathias Partita 1st, 2nd and 3rd movements.

The seventh record on the EMI Label dates from 1967, is in stereo and features a performance by Arthur Wills from Ely Cathedral. The works performed are Messian Dieu Parmi Nous, Gigout Scherzo No 8 Of 10 Pieces and Toccata No 4 of 10 Pieces, Franck Final In B Flat No 6, Dupre Variations Sur Un Noel, Vierne Naladesand Wills Introduction And Allegro.

The eighth record on the His Master's Voice/EMI Label dates from 1965, is in mono and performed by Lionel Dakers from Exeter Cathedral. The works performed are Mendelssohn's Sonata No6 In d Minor Chorale And Variations Andante Sostenuto-Allegro Molto, Fugue and Finale, Wesley's Holsworthy Church Bells, C.S.Lang Tuba Tune In D Major, Thalben-Ball Elegy, Darke A Fantasyand Peeters Chorale Prelude On Veni Creator Spiritus.

 The ninth record on His Master's Voice/EMI Label dates from 1965 , is in mono and comes from Coventry Cathedral and is performed by David Lepine.  The works performed are J S Bach Chorale PreludeS In Dulci Jubilo BWV 729 and 608,  Buxtehude Passacaglia In D Minor, Liszt Prelude And Fugue On B.A.C.H. Ealond Cornet Voluntary  No 5, Peeters Chorale Herers Hy Is Geebooren, Langlais Te Deum ( Hymn d'Actions de Graces Scarlatti Organ Sonata No 288 and Sweelinck Variations On Mein Junges Leben.

  Record Number 10 His Masters Voice /EMI (1965) - is from St. Giles' Cathedral, Edinburgh - the organist is Herrick Bunney.    Pieces include those by Pachelbel, Herbert Howells, Jehan Alain and Francois Couperin.   For details of the pieces please contact me!

Record Number 14 - His Masters Voice / EMI (1966) is from Llandaff Cathedral.  The organist is Robert Joyce.  Pieces include those by Bach, Brahms, Vaughan Williams and William Mathias Variations On A Hymn Tune Op 29.  

Record Number 15 - His Masters Voice / EMI (1964) is from Westminster Abbey.  the organist is Douglas Guest and the recording is in mono.   Pieces include Bach Toccata In A Minor, Festing Largo, Allegro Aria And Two Variations, Tomkins Voluntary, Fancy and In Nomine, Mendelsohnn 1st Movement Sonata No 4 In B Flat Major, Howells Saraband and Preludio and Rheinberger Introduction And Passacalioa Sonata No 8 In E Minor.

Record Number 16 - His Masters Voice / EMI ( 1970) is from Lincoln Minster.   The organist is Philip Marshall and pieces include those by Mendelssohn, Brahms, Charles Wood, Frank Bridge and Hubert Parry (please contact me for details of the pieces!)

As you can see from the records that I have fully listed, some of the works contained are not commonly heard!!  The earlier records were very expensive to purchase and hence are now very rare to find.  The condition of these records in general are superb.  There are one or two marks on one or two of the sleeves but these are more from their age!! 

These are a set of records that will delight any enthusiast of great organ music and any lover of the organs of the greatest Cathedrals in England!
