Description
The Groove were/was an Australian/New Zealand band active between 1967-1970. (Previously they’d been something to do with Max Merritt and the Meteors, and later changed their name to Eureka Stockade..) They were pretty huge in Australia and released two singles in the UK.
This rare acetate is NEITHER OF THOSE.
The Groove arrived in the UK and recorded a song written by Mickey Most’s brother David, and Clive Westlake, at Abbey Rd.
This song was “How the Web was Woven”.
The band loved it (with Procol Harum style organ) but EMI didn’t.
About a year later Elvis recorded the song, using (so they say) the Groove recording as a demo. This certainly sounds more like The King’s version than the Jackie Lomax recording did.
This recording on this disc was never released.
Here it is on an original EMI acetate, dated 6-5-69, cut (in “Room 2”) by Abbey Road engineer/producer Andy Stephens.
The acetate is single-sided, and plays very well.
I would rate it as a solid VG+ if not better.
