        Traveler's Tale

Rare advance release PROMOTIONAL original 1969 first pressing in THICK gatefold cover of third and last SRC album...

The SRC (short for (their great vocalist) Scott Richardson Case) was one of the main 'head' groups from the famed 60's Detoit/Ann Arbor. From 1965 to 1970 they were a staple at many legendary Detroit rock venues such as The Grande Ballroom which is perhaps best remembered as the setting in which the MC5 album Kick out the Jams was recorded.

Originally called the Ravins and then the Fugitives and formed by guitarists Steve Lyman and Gary Quackenbush, the early core of the group began to get into tight playing shape and soon met with a well known Ann Arbor area manager by the name of Hugh "Jeep" Holland.

Holland, also a record store manager, served as Russ Gibb's booking agent and was associated with many of the top Detroit based artists of his time such as MC5, Bob Seger, The Rationals, Amboy Dukes and Thyme. While originally impressed with the band's sound, he felt it lacked a "front man" and chose to select a new singer for the band before he would sign and manage them. In the selection process Holland narrowed the search down to two singers to place in the band: Scott Richardson, the singer of a local band known as the Chosen Few or a young stock boy at his store by the name of James Osterberg (known to the masses as Iggy Pop ) who he would later place with The Psychedelic Stooges.

With growing popularity, the band split from Holland and began to open in and around Detroit for several national and international artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Traffic, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, among others. Soon after the success of their first record the band began to work on a second album. "Milestones" was released in March of 1969. From this there were band member changes, and both guitarists were dropped from the band; including the fabulous SRC guitarist Gary Quackenbush who 'left' just before the start of 1970's  "Traveler's Tale" ... Gary Quackenbush was in his own words in a "severe" motorcycle accident that had him eventually hospitalized. Whether or not this had any additional effect on the group kicking him out is unknown. With a new lineup featuring a single guitarist, Ray Goodman, in place of both Gary Quackenbush and Steve Lyman, SRC recorded and released Traveler's Tale, its third and final LP. Showcasing a stylistic shift away from psychedelic rock and toward hard progressive rock, much in the same direction that Minnesota band The Litter went when they recorded their hard progressive album "Emerge" ... "Traveler's Tale" wasn't promoted by Capitol Records who soon dropped them from their roster, but the album is excellent, full of self penned tunes highlighted by a more adventurous direction that contains lots of gushy organ/ guitar passages within memorable melodies ...Despite the shakeup, the sound hardly changed at all, perhaps becoming just a bit more progressive-minded. The organ-guitar duels and alternation of concise hard rock with lengthy progressive passages also remained intact from before. These these guys were serious about what they did, and "Traveler's Tale" is impressive, in its own way.

"Traveler's Tale" remains the hardest to find of the SRC albums ...on the lime green Capitol label, the album had only a 'one run' pressing in much smaller quantity than their other albums, thus not an easy find. As well the dark gatefold cover did not wear well and most copies found have a lot of shelf wear due to the dark colors incolved ...

CONDITION: The cover an old style thick gatefold, really hard to find clean, the cover did not wear well and most all copies have a lot of shelf wear. This copy has very little on the all important front cover, around VG++ with the standard circle promo drill as per all Capitol Records 60's promos ... the back cover has shelf (ring) wear. The seams are very solid, the whole gatefold stiff and solid. See photo. No bends, no writing, no split seams. Collectible

The vinyl is all clean and clear M- TOP LEVEL...nice and glossy smooth on both sides makes this one an instant keeper...the lime green Capitol labels are really clean too...
