This version of "American Woman" is completely different to the one on Rembrandt Pussyhorse, and it was included as a giveaway single with initial copies of the essential 1986 Blind Eye Sees All video. (The DVD reissue incorporates it as an audio track that plays when you access the Gallery in the bonus features, which as I recall also included a whole bunch of messed-up and surreal clown drawings.) When compared with the longer and more pounding LP version, this single take is actually more "similar" to the Guess Who original... but that's just relatively speaking, of course. Gibby Haynes and Teresa Nervosa utilize more of the original lyrics this time out, and Paul Leary plays those famous guitar solos a bit straighter but still makes it recognizably his own. This is a nice counterbalance to the possessed-sounding and wonderfully bizarre Rembrandt version.
I read an interview once where Randy Bachman was actually quite complementary to the Surfers' cover of his song. Considering that Bachman's also played guitar on occasion with DOA and Jello Biafra, it would appear that Randy's a pretty cool guy.
