Way hard to find very first album by SLY & The Family Stone ... most "San Francisco Sound" fans have no idea this band emerged in the very beginning of the Bay Ara Hippie sensation, rising up along with the Airplane, Dead, etc... 
Rare 1967 first print of an otherwise buried treasure:
Prophetic in their rhythms, racial philosophy, and ostensible gender relations, Sly & the Family Stone scored a string of '60s hits that crystallized a vision of freedom in complexity, coherence, wild anarchy, and endless affirmation. That vision is present on this much-sampled seldom seen FIRST LP, which doesn't even generate a single song any ordinary fan might remember, and that's the beauty of it.
A Whole New Thing, tanked in 1967 but was vastly underestimated and can drop jaws at 50 paces 50+ years later. The standout here is "Trip to Your Heart," a mystically perfect love song dressed up as a sweaty foot-stomper.
When they made this album in 1967, Sly and the Family Stone were already way out ahead of the pack in terms of the way they approached and played music. The group benefited immeasurably from the extensive experience of their leader: Sylvester Stewart, still in his early 20s, had been making records since his teens and had pulled significant stints as band leader, songwriter, producer and radio DJ. Nevertheless, that first LP – A Whole New Thing – went totally ignored. The opening track and first single, Underdog, cast him and his group as outsiders who had “got to be twice as good” to “get a fair shake”, and the album seemed to take that as its starting point. It’s a record that bristles with invention, time signatures changing as complicated melody lines crash against one another. Underdog is a barnstorming beginning to a terrific LP, a record that links genres and styles into a compelling whole. That determination to prove that anyone and everyone was welcome and considered an equal in the presence of the gods of music would fuel the group’s career

"A Whole New Thing" is an astonishing and completely underappreciated record: the composition, arrangement and production of songs like TRIP TO YOUR HEART sounding like they they were in 1971 --- so for 1967 this material is way ahead, the sheer physical presence of the music can only be comparable to the sensuous impact of some material by the Jimi Hendrix Experience tracks, "Hey Joe" or "The wind cries Mary", or "Stone Free." Listen to the subtle stereo effects in the drums on "Trip To YOur Heart", some of these songs would fit well onto "Exile On Main Street" (thematically as well as musically). The band at the peak of the powers and superior compositions to "Stand" or "Life". This goes to show how much Sly had lost already by 1969 when most people assume he had reached the summit with that camp appearance on a muddy and overpopulated camp site.  This could prove a discovery for anybody with a weakness for good music.
