Here's a nice RARE item for you! It's Luisa Tetrazzini on a 12" Pink 78rpm Gramophone Monarch "pre-dog" number 053142, labelled as "Ah Fors e Lui" and recorded in London in December 1907. Confusingly, it's actually mainly the "Sempre Libera" part of the aria from Traviata (which is how it is logged and described by Robert Johannesson, to whom many thanks). Any hoo, it's a magnificant piece of singing. The mx number, should you need to check, is 2179f and the orchestra is conducted by Percy Pitt.Condition-wise, this is not QUITE a perfect disc.
It is clean and unsullied but there are some sleeve marks (which don't sound) and a couple of mini rubs, possibly from grit in the sleeve at some time in the last 116 years. These do produce a few light thuds, on our ludicrously expensive transcription deck although they can't be heard AT ALL on our top of the range HMV wind-up. We have photographed the two rubs, close up, so you can see how tiny and insignificant they are. We reckon it's a good useful VG+ or thereabouts, and will give another 116 years of pleasure if you treat it with the respect it deserves.
Oh... and there's a pencilled price on the label. At some time in the VERY DISTANT past it was sold for 2 shillings, reduced from half-a-crown! Wouldn't it be nice to be able to buy records of this quality today, for 10p! Sigh.... NO OVERSEAS bidders please.
