THE BEATLES:
NORWEGIAN WOOD (THIS BIRD HAS FLOWN)/IF I NEEDED SOMEONE (Capitol 19341 "FOR JUKEBOXES ONLY!" black vinyl CEMA Special Markets 45): Clean M- w/jukestrip.
It's frustrating to discover, after painstakingly assembling 29 colored vinyl Beatles "FOR JUKEBOXES ONLY!" singles, that #30, Norwegian Wood (Capitol #18888), is super-scarce (1000 pressed on green vinyl, of which only about 650 were actually released). On the few occasions when one comes up for sale, it usually sells for about $500.
Here's an excellent solution: the black vinyl Capitol #19341, can be #30 in your set, and it was previously unreleased on 45RPM. It's scarcer, and more valuable, than any of the 29 colored vinyl singles in the series! This example has a superficial fingernail mark on the B-side which won't affect play; otherwise, it's pristine, UNPLAYED MINT! All the CEMA Special Markets "For Jukeboxes Only" 45s are escalating in price:
The Capitol colored vinyl 45s are the rarest stock-copy Beatles singles ever released in the U.S.; there were only 10,000 to 22,000 copies pressed of each "FOR JUKEBOXES ONLY!" 45. This was a sign of the times; by the mid-nineties the era of the 45RPM record seemed to be over. Juke-jobbers, for whom the series was created, had already moved to CD jukeboxes. They didn't want the records, so Capitol sold them to chain stores and mail-order companies just to get rid of them. The rarity of the 30 colored vinyl Beatles 45s is impressive compared to the countless millions of '60s orange-and-yellow swirls and the immense flood of orange, blue, and purple-label reissues of the '70s and '80s. Norwegian Wood was one of the second 15 records in the series, and these were the last, and scarcest, of the colored vinyls issued. The entire series includes eleven singles that had never before appeared as U.S. 45s (and two others with alternate flip sides). It's been over 15 years since Capitol released the last of these beautiful records, and rapidly-increasing values reflect their rarity.
