Description
Cactus - Cactus LP, Atlantic 2400020 1970.
Apologies to everybody who was watching and or bidding on these records before when I pulled them. With the amount of interest they had I was concerned there would be potential issues without a comprehensive description and over the last few weeks have had minimal time to keep on top of anything properly on here due to some family issues so felt ending them was my only option at the time. Sorry if I put anyone out.
This was the debut album from the obscure band Cactus, issued on Atlantic with the first press plum labels and A1/B1 matrices. In my opinion this is up there with some of the best "unknown" heavy prog psych rock albums made, traversing blues in all its guises and, along with the likes of Savoy Brown and The Litter, definitely hints at proto-metal. The album starts out with fast raucous blues punk rock into acoustic gospel blues into melodic blues beat descending to bursts of manic psych which is amazing. The b-side makes its way from hard rock to proper Howlin' Wolf style blues to fast heavy electric blues with a drum solo section that must last at least five minutes on the final track! Visually there are a few marks dotted about the surface and an odd deeper mark on either side of the b-side that are so straight they could have been made with a ruler, yet the record plays great. 1pop on A1, a background crackle on A2, a background crackle at the start of A4, 1 pop at the start of B1 and a background crackle on B2 & B3, otherwise playing fine. A superb album worth anyone's time. Happy to combine postage at cost.
