Collectors, here is a rare and interesting record, RCA Victor 10 inch 78 #1616. circa 1932. Enrico Caruso sings the familiar tenor arias "O Solo Mio" and "La Donna e Mobile" with the Victor Symphony Orchestra. So far, so good. But there is a "catch" here; per the book "Collector's Guide to Victor Records", "In 1932, Victor dubbed an electrically recorded orchestra over several of Caruso's vocal recordings". Of course, Caruso died in 1921 and electrical recording at Victor did not start until 1925. The book states: "the unique "Curtains" label was employed on these through 1937". I don't know if Victor stopped marketing these records at that time, or just switched them to a "regular" label. So this record was made between 1932 and 1937. One could speculate whether this is a big improvement over the original, acoustically recorded discs. This record plays very well, has little wear and little surface noise. Given that these were released during the depression, I suspect these did not sell very well. This is the first one I have had in my hands in over 40 years of collecting Victrolas and records! If you like what you see, do not pass this up, who knows when another one will come up for sale! Sensible buy it now price given what I have here, go for it!!!
