Description
It's always a problem grading these lovely old SKA and REGGAE records.
They went to lots of parties.
That means that they're a bit battered and that's why many have names written on the label.
HOWEVER... they're usually cut VERY LOUD and though they look a bit rough, they sound OK (especially if you press the "Mono" button).
This means that a 60's Ska goodie can be perfectly acceptable, even if it looks R.A.A.B.B. (Rough As A Bear's Bottom)..
Please “bear” that in mind when reading my descriptions.
Here we have a 1966 double-sided 45 rpm banger, produced by Coxsone Dodd on the prestigious Doctor Bird label DB1033.
It's "Do Good" by Freddie And Fitzy (Freddie is, of course, a young Freddie McGregor and Fitzy is Ernest "Fitzroy" Wilson later of the Clarendonians).
'pon the other side is a red hot workout "On The Town" by The Soul Brothers who, I'll wager, bear a strong resemblance to The Sound Dimension etc, most likely being Coxsone's house band.
The label is clean and tidy and has no writing thereupon.
The centre, prong fans, is the three-prong type.
Conditionwise, it's not a perfect record, cos it's a Reggae 45, innit?
It has a number of light storage scratch/marks which, because it is cut so doggone L O U D barely register, with the "mono" button pressed.
There is an audible click or two at the start of "Do Good" but nothing to cause excessive grief. "On The Town" sounds great and plays very well throughout.
Let's call it a very useful, collectable strong VG which would be perfectly acceptable in your DJ box.
