It's always a problem grading these lovely old SKA records.
They went to lots of parties.
That means that they're a bit battered and that's why many have names written on the label.
HOWEVER... they're usually cut VERY LOUD and though they look a bit rough, they sound OK (especially if you press the "Mono" button).
This means that a 60's Ska goodie can be perfectly acceptable, even if it looks R.A.A.B.B. (Rough As A Bear's Bottom)..
Please “bear” that in mind when reading my descriptions.
Here is wonderful Toots Hibbert with The Maytals on a quite scruffy looking single on the Jamaican "JAGUAR" label.
It's "Country Road" (as he spells it and sings it.. despite John Denver having different ideas) and a riotous version of Richard Berry's everlastingly wonderful "Louie Louie". The number is Jaguar J76 and it dates from 1972.
Ginger Jeff (who gate-crashes most of my eBay photo sessions) is especially fond of the Jaguar label, because it features his portrait.
The record is, as mentioned, rather SCRUFFY, but both sides play VERY WELL on my rather good gear. There is an alarming looking quarter-inch mark on "Louie Louie" which my arm/stylus sails through effortlessly.
I can't guarantee that it'll do the same on a Dansette, but you can always resort to repair tactics featuring the old wooden tooth-pick trick.
Let's call it a strong G+ that plays like a VG or better.
TWO THINGS.. this is a vastly superior version of Louie Louie, compared to the mix with the underwater guitar that appears on Toots' "Best Of" CDs.. and secondly, the definitive version of Louie Louie is by Rice University Marching Owl Band and you can hear it on You Tube ("more cowbell!").
Buy it now before the four horsemen turn up.
