Label/Format: Vertigo – Second press Spiral format with full swirl on side one and smaller one above outline type on side two (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both immaculate: ultra clean, fresh with no grubbiness to the superbly white areas. A couple of tiny and faint spindle marks apart, only just evident with scrutiny, these looks practically as made and are a joy to view.

Cat Number: 6360 500.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 118 grams. Around average for this one.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: This second pressing with the smooth surface cover is a little easier to find than the one with the textured surfaced cover. But in terms of condition, this is a beauty and I have seldom, if ever seen a better one. Almost the same goes for the record and even the later, and much rarer, style Swirl inner. A quality example of one of the finest on this massively collectable label.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Rod’s second album and his last on this most famous and very collectable label. Gasoline Alley is Rod as his very best, classic vocals with wonderful songs, a young man at the peak of his powers before those poppy ballads took over. One of rock’s greatest vocalists performing classic, more rock-based material. Often to some, a surprise artist on this more specialist ‘progressive’ label that seemed to specialise in new, obscure and less commercial acts. But as this time, Rod was far less known, working previously with Jeff Beck. This would have sold more than most on Vertigo, but try finding a copy in such lovely condition. Sound quality is paramount for me and this delivers big-time. A super looker too.

Cover Condition and Format: EXCELLENT(++): and as close to true Mint(-) as they get. An unlaminated gatefold format with smooth finish on all surfaces. It has the VO Price Code on the top right back cover. It was printed and made by Howards. Includes the later style Swirl inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Little short of as made with any handling traces or marks almost minuscule. No rubbing, no creasing, clean and as fressh as when made. Rarely, if ever seen better.

Cover Back: Superb again: a small low level crease near the bottom right corner that registers little, any others tiny and ultra faint and only with scrutiny under light can the faintest trace of rim dulling be seen – I am talking almost nothing. A wonderful cover in every respect.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb again with a great picture of Rod. A very gentle crease near the bottom of the hold hinge, that apart, as made.

Top Edges: Barely even a hint of wear at all and both very straight.

Bottom Edges: Almost the same again, Just a tiny light rub near the right corners.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any wear and guaranteed untrimmed. One tiny burr trace on the back opening (going beyond critical), no thickening worthy of mention.

Spine and Text: A supreme spine which is devoid of rubbing or wear. Even the folds are unrubbed and the tiny crease on the bottom hardly registers. Solid, straight, uncompressed and folded square, so the edges meet up closely together and parallel. The text and surface totally unworn and ultra clean. The deep magenta colour to the text incredibly dark and vivid and with no fading at all.

Corners: Tiny tip rubs (or less) with excellent or even better shape retained.

Cover Summary: A superb all-round example of this famous early Rod Stewart cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better. This beautiful vintage item should please most-all collectors and they rarely show up quite like this.

The Spiral Inner: MINT(-): like the cover (and record), rarely seen like this these days. Barely aged with any hint of discolouration on the seams, ultra faint. An ultra clean polylining as seen through two immaculate crisp and undamaged window circles. No creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This is simply fantastic.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++) / EXCELLENT: side two has a totally superficial surface mark with no audio affect whatsoever. That apart, a fantastic disc. Very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. Little else seen under light, any surface traces tiny, few and faint and without doubt, a copy hardly played reitterated by superb sound quality. Visually a very fine record that should please many, if not most collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This vintage Stewart album plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is strong with a full dynamic range and detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted, a really exceptional pressing of this often variable album. Both channels are clean, sharp, precise and focused with no pressing noises. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this great Spiral album, one of the true classics on this much sort-after label. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and is strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
