Label/Format: Mercury – original intense matt black and silver format with smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive, spindle marks are quite few in number, but some a little long on side two. But being mostly fine, they show little with normal viewing. This is an unusually clean record that plays beautifully.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 112 grams. Quite light as quite typical for the time of the oil shortage. But perfectly pressed on pure vinyl, thus top quality clean sound throughout.

Rarity & Overview: Moderate: this sold well and made the top of the UK album charts in 1972. But conditions are the paramount factors for the originals. Stewart here almost at the peak of his powers and popularity with a fantastic backing band, he could do no wrong at this time. But bordering on glam-rock, he proved highly popular with teenagers of the time with many copies purchased by them. Thus so many early copies played to destruction on the most basic, even crude record players. Torn, rubbed and bashed covers, often with names, the record scratched and loaned out – we have all seen such copies of this and similar records like T. Rex and Bowie et al. Finding a very gently and carefully played 1Y / 2Y matrix original that offers fantastic clean sound throughout with a hardly worn cover is a considerably harder prospect to find. Indeed these early Mercury’s are actually quite hard. This label very closely related to the famous Vertigo spiral label around this time means a cover in the same ilk. Slightly gimmicky, and actually not so easy to even find where the record is stored within this double gatefold format. It would have easily fitted in with the other famous Spirals of the early 1970s and is a really lovely design. Indeed most will know, Stewart’s first solo pair were both issued on that most collectable of labels. So for fans of this evergreen popular artist, here with magnificent songs before he went a little too commercial, this is an essential classic that could prove difficult to find much better.

Brief Info: The fourth solo Rod Stewart album, and second to make the number one spot in the UK charts after ‘Every Picture Tells a Story’. A classic set with star backing musicians including Ronnie Wood, Ronnie Lane and Kenney Jones. This a lovely very early copy with both record and cover in very fine condition.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a great design with a hint of gimmickry. An unlaminated double gatefold format with the outer covers both single thickness. Inbetween is a thicker storage area, the record enters on the top when the cover is seen facing the correct way (as seen in my photographs). Printed and made in England by Howards and includes the Polydor style lined inner sleeve that is date-coded 0972 (September 1972), so this a very early example.

Cover Front: Clean, fresh and attractive, and being single thickness, fragile and wear-prone. Barely any at all in terms of rubbing or marks, and only a fairly small crease on the bottom right corner. These not seen a great deal better often.

Cover Back: The back is little short of as made, the lack of ringwear, or any wear or creasing come to that, is rare on another single thickness sheet.

Cover Inner Gatefolds: Yes, there are two very different spreads as seen. One ‘page’ each has one very small tape residue trace near the top – the owner put a number ID square on his albums, this is now the only evidence and one residue trace hardly even shows on a dark area. This apart, both are almost as made and look great.

Top Edges: Two single thickness edges (front and back) and a thicker storage area inbetween. All hardly worn at all and very neat. The odd tiny burr trace on the single ones seen viewed end-on, this being quite critical as well.

Bottom Edges: Same format as above and all practically the same.

Right Edge(s), and Type: And again, same format as above and barely any wear. All the fragile single thickness card is unfeathered.

’Spine’: This is no ordinary spine: there are two separate edges and between them, the record is stored which is less than obvious. Both solid, straight with barely any hint of wear to either, this crucial area adds the gimmickery to the cover and will rarely be seen better. Not text printed on these or any other edges.

Corners: There are a number of corners on this fairly unusual cover, all retain very fine and mostly excellent or better shape. Any tip rubbing tiny and no softening or feathering.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: with hardly any real wear, just the usual toning of the adhesive areas of the seams. Two crisp undamaged window circles and clear polylining, barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This early example being date-coded 0972 (September 1972).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and fairly solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface traces few, ultra light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light, barely even hairline thickness. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sound traces are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
