Description
A balladeer from the 50s, Ronnie Hilton released the Laughing Gnome as the B Side to the infamous 'If I Were A Rich Man" from the hit musical 'Fiddler On The Roof' but unfortunately the record failed miserably to chart (as did Bowie's debut release of the Laughing Gnome in 1967). Accordingly, due to the connection with David, this record has become exceedingly rare for both stock and demo copies....with demo copies being the rarer of the two. At this juncture in his career David’s manager, Kenneth Pitt, was trying to market him as a songwriter; despite beginning his recording career in 1964 he would not have a hit under his own name until 1969, and it would take another three years after that until he realised his next hit. Kenneth Pitt and I were close friends for many years and I have retained much of his correspondence over the course of our friendship in addition to several other David B's (and other Pitt proteges/artists) earlier releases and covers.
