Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any of the small few spindle marks very light and faint as seen under angled light.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 142 grams. This way over average for this album, a very solid heavy pressed early example.

Rarity: Moderate: but finding such clean copies with the early matrixes and stampers is far harder.

Brief Info: A classic debut album with an equally stunning cover – this was far more progressive than glam-rock and nothing like as commercial as the later titles. It sold fairly well and peaked at No. 10 in the UK charts, not a bad achievement for a new band at this time. This was Roxy Music with Eno and his treatments of the conventional instruments gave them a very interesting sound which was developed still further on their classic second album For Your Pleasure. Sadly Eno left after that and their sound became more conventional and still superb up to Siren, then far more commercial. This debut was more experimental and it works to perfection. Island got the packaging right as well and even fully laminated this classic cover, not something they did often. I have often found this album a bit of a ‘crackler’, surface sound within the pressing, even with rasping noises are quite common, but this example plays well with little unwanted – the odd surface trace or sporadic click near impossible to avoid to remind it is a vintage record being played. Very nice cover and with the Island blue inner too. For those who only know the post-Siren Roxy, well the early albums are different, far more ‘progressive’ and hugely exciting, sophisticated and brilliant.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a fully laminated gatefold that was printed and made in England by Tinsley Robor. Includes the original blue lined Island inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: Magnificent artwork with rich vibrant colour and this lady still looks as seductive as she did back in the early 70s - her name is Kari-Ann Muller, who later married Chris Jagger, brother of Mick. The laminate retains a rich shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting and minimal traces of any dulling. Any marks or creases are very few and faint and little detracts from the gorgeous artwork. The back left (opening) edge sees the laminate end short of full width, the fine exposed strip is paler than the main artwork, possible fading – or the laminate makes the ink look darker. A small detail I thought worthy of mention. This famous cover will be quite hard to find much better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Magnificent, practically as made. Fully laminated also, the centrefold hinge is uncracked and the lamination tight and solid, beware not to open totally to avoid breaking on the middle area. This still gives forth a reassuring fresh creak and crackle on opening which few will these days – so utmost freshness guaranteed. If only Island could have laminated all their classic covers, what a wonderful sight they would have made.

Top & Bottom Edges: All four straight and smooth to the touch, minimal traces of any friction blemishes.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge is tucked and folded with a real finished edge, this has barely anything to fault and is very straight. The back is clean, sharp with barely any wear either. Record entered here and is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression. But this is one of those that will form a natural central crease which this has done. But this retains full laminate adhesion with no flaking and all the text is present but just a little sunken as naturally occurs – this seen on my close-up picture. Few of these will be seen a great deal better.

Corners: The small tip chip with minimal rubbing to any, all retain excellent shape with no dinks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this classic early 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: this the original blue lined Island inner with the i logo ‘island records ltd basing street london w11’ text. The retailer wrote the catalogue number on one top left corner and there is a small pen mark on the other side near the bottom right corner. Any ageing light with any crinkle only light and no hard creasing. The minor light mark and minimal seam adhesive darkening, but all edges unsplit with no repairs. This also retains excellent colour without the usual fading many are seen with.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed – a more robust and thick earlier pressing confirmed by the first mothers and early stampers. Any surface marks are fine and brush like hairlines seen under bright angled light – purely superficial and showing little at all with normal viewing. There are no penetrating scratches on either side. Visually a splendid record that should please many collectors, but not the perfectionists.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This better quality Island record, pressed by EMI plays, for most, eben above it’s very fine visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed with just the odd trace here and there. This too for an album I have so often found very crackly, and it does have several very quiet passages, but little spoiled the experience with this nice early copy. The sporadic click will be very hard to avoid totally and a couple of three were heard. Few examples will outperform this early 1972 pressing significantly I feel sure. In fact this is the first copy of this I have offered for some time, I had a couple of others in stock, but could not offer them as they did not please me enough to do so – if they fail to please me, why should I think they would please a customer? Both channels are clean and sharp, I am sure this record has been played quite lightly and the the surface ‘brush’ marks probably the result in dry-cloth cleaning – no harm done and these so fine they hardly even show unless scrutinised point-blank. Little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this quality album, but not for the highly discerning who only want perfection at any cost – finding that on this album is difficult – also I play all my records on very revealing equipment as listed further down. This copy could prove difficult to find significantly better and merits high recommendation, I am sure many collectors and fans will enjoy it.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
