Beatles, Please, Please Me, Vinyl Mono LP – Highly collectable Black and Gold Label, First Pressing - PMC 1201.
I’m no record collector or dealer but this is a rare and highly collectable copy of the Beatles first Mono LP.
According to the Beatles Collecting Guide http://beatlescollectingguide.weebly.com/please-please-me.html, it is the first pressing with gold lettering on a Black ‘Parlaphone’ label. This pressing has the six ‘new McCartney/Lennon songs’ credited to ‘Dick James Music Co’ – unlike the second and later pressings where publishing was credited to Northern Songs - see photo.
It comes with the original laminated cover with a polythene inner sleeve. The back cover includes an advert for ‘Emitex cleaning material’. Side 1 of the record is numbered as: XEX 421 -1N and Side 2: XEX 422-1N.
So what condition is the album in? Well considering it is now over 51 years old, it was issued on the 22nd March 19963, I think it is in very good condition.
The vinyl record:
This record has not been professionally cleaned. As indicated in the photographs, there are some visible minor scratches on both sides of the vinyl but these don’t have any significant impact on the overall quality of sound. I played the disc on a Steepletone 3 speed vinyl turntable record player (model ST918) at full volume and was genuinely surprised at how good the reproduction actually was. There is some low surface noise and a couple of odd clicks here and there between tracks. Yet they were hardly noticeable when the music was playing. There was no irritating repetitive clicking or sticking an any of the songs on both sides of the disk. The labels on both sides of the record are in good condition with only very minor spindle damage. As is visible in the photo there is a small black vertical line on the label of side one which is definitely in the printing and not a scratch or additional mark. This may indicate to serious collectors where it came in the first pressing. The LP is flat .
The Cover and inner sleeve
The outer cover has a 1 1/4 inch tear at the lower right hand corner just below the words ‘Photo: Angus McBean’ and there is a corresponding slight indentation in the top right hand corner below the word ‘Mono’. The laminate is complete on the front cover but is beginning to roll back at the top and bottom on the rear; see photos.
Inevitably with an album of this vintage there is some age related discolouration on both the front and back of the outer sleeve but this does not detract from the Angus McBean photo on the front and the text on the back including the track listing and sleeve notes by Tony Barrow.
The inner polythene sleeve
Although there is some discolouration of the outer paper, both it and the inner polythene sleeve are not torn or split.
In short, this record is not in ‘mint condition’ but it is a highly collectable and playable disc which is in remarkably good condition given its age and reproduces beautifully the music of the Beatles at the start of their recording career.
