Up for auction is a rare and unusual copy of "The Tenor Scene" by Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis/Johnny Griffin Quintet At Minton's Playhouse on Prestige Records (#7191) from 1961. This is a Mono, Deep Groove, RVG original pressing. The back of the cover is stamped "Preview Copy." What sets this copy apart from others is that there is a misspelling on the side A Label. Instead of "The Tenor Scene," the label erroneously reads "The Tenor Scenes," Plural. The record company caught the error early on and corrected it in later printings. But because this copy is "promotional," it was the earliest pressing and most likely to have an undetected error. I've seen plenty of "deep groove" copies where this error has been corrected. Condition: Excellent. The cover stills shows its original gloss with no losses, chips or ring wear. The corners are sharp and unbumped. The seams are intact, tight, with no splits. The back cover, stamped "Preview Copy," is very nice, no markings or ring wear--only a small stain in the lower right corner (see photo). The vinyl is equally well preserved, with its original high gloss luster and bright labels with no marks around spindle holes. One small needle mark at the beginning of the first song on side two. Overall, a very clean and well-preserved copy of one of Eddie Davis' best-rated performances. And the printing error makes this a rare bird, indeed.
