Rasputin & the Monks were a short-lived garage rock band from New Hampshire active around the mid-1960s. Little is known about their members or exact history, but they are remembered for their raw, unpolished take on British Invasion-style rock and early R&B covers. Their sound captures the youthful energy and rough-edged enthusiasm that defined many local American garage bands of the era — bands that often played school dances and small-town clubs, then scraped together enough money to record a few songs at regional studios. Because of their limited output and the rarity of their recordings, Rasputin & the Monks have achieved cult status among collectors of obscure 1960s garage rock.
Album The album Sun of My Soul is one of the strangest and most obscure releases of the 1960s garage era. Credited to “The Octet / Rasputin and the Monks,” it features two completely different groups on opposite sides of the record. One side showcases The Octet — likely a choral or easy-listening ensemble — while the other captures Rasputin & the Monks ripping through a series of raucous, lo-fi covers of hits like “19th Nervous Breakdown” and “I Wanna Be Your Man.” The contrast between sides is startling: serene choral harmonies on one, gritty teenage garage rock on the other. Released in extremely small numbers, the record has since become a highly sought-after collector’s item, valued as much for its mystery as for its primitive musical charm.
