ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This beautiful and very rare 5LP box set – a still-sealed copy – from Philips (416 342-1, Dutch pressing, silver/black label, DDD stereo) features the great Norwegian pianist Robert Riefling’s magnificent traversal of Johann Sebastian Bach’s 48 Preludes & Fugues (Books I & II) of the Well-Tempered Clavier BWV 846-893, recorded at the Assembly Hall of Oslo University in March 1985 (producer: Arne Peter Rognan / engineer: Arne Akselberg).

This is a landmark cycle, one that can be spoken of in the same breath as those by Samuel Feinberg, Sviatoslav Richter, Rosalyn Tureck, Glenn Gould, Andras Schiff, Angela Hewitt, et al. This set is very elusive in any condition, much less sealed – a great piano rarity.

At the website of the Norwegian label Simax one can find this brief biographical sketch of Riefling, written by Idar Karevold: “Robert Riefling (1911-1988) came from a family of musicians of German origin, and was active as a pianist and as a teacher. He was a student of Nils Larsen in Oslo, and at the age of eleven he performed solo with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. Three years later he made his professional solo début with a recital in Norway’s capital. Following studies with Karl Leimer, Wilhelm Kempf and Edwin Fischer he embarked on an international career which was to last for the rest of his life. He had a wide-ranging repertoire, and was the first Norwegian pianist to play the whole of J. S. Bach’s Das wohltemperierte Klavier in concert. He recorded the cycle twice, as well as the complete sonatas of Beethoven. Riefling also gave premier performances of piano concertos by Egge, Sæverud, Rivertz and Valen.”

Incidentally, the handsome cover painting of Riefling was done by Alf Torp Hansen. Without doubt, there is a fine booklet enclosed in the box (the set was issued with one); there are also liner notes on the back side, provided in both Norwegian and English, by Per Buer.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the still-sealed box is MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of and the box appears as new. Even the shrinkwrap is perfectly intact, no tears whatsover – overall, this rates as a gorgeous collector’s copy.

The condition of the 5 LPs is MINT throughout. These are prisinte, still-sealed LPs – the ideal collector's copies.
