This is a limited edition pressing of Rutherford Chang's "The White Album," released in 2013 in an edition of 1,000. This record is a by-product of Chang's "We Buy White Albums" art project.
We Buy White Albums
Rutherford Chang’s We Buy White Albums was a conceptual art project built around collecting first pressings of The Beatles’ 1968 White Album. Though mass-produced with identical white covers and serial numbers, each copy has aged uniquely, marked by wear, stains, and scribbles.
Chang presented these records in gallery spaces resembling record stores, inviting visitors to flip through and listen to layered collages of the albums played simultaneously. The project transforms a cultural icon into a reflection on consumerism, individuality, and the passage of time.
When Chang listened to copies of “The White Album” at his art gallery, he used a professional recording device connected to the turntables to make a digital recording; he later had a studio electronically layer 100 of them into a pressing of 1,000 vinyl records, with all the static, scratches and skips of the original recordings.
Rutherford Chang's The White Album
Created by layering 100 unique copies of The Beatles' White Album, this 96 minute double-LP captures how every copy of the iconic album has been distinctly shaped by its history, both visually and sonically. The 50 year-old albums, with scratches and physical imperfections accumulated with age, all play slightly differently, causing the 100 layers to gradually drift out of sync over the course of each side.
The gatefold cover and disc labels are composites of the weathered and graffitied originals. Also included is a 24 x 24 inch poster insert featuring images of the individual covers. This album was made from a collection of over 3,000 numbered pressings of The White Album.
Condition:
Records are in great NM shape, well cared for by collector.
Gatefold jacket is in NM- shape with small corner ding (1/2") on rear right top and a very slight crease (1/8') on rear right bottom corner.
Poster is folded, has never been opened and is in NM shape.
