Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only one or two tiny, very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Brief Info: I do not sell classical music often, but a record of this quality simply has to be offered – all the classical records I am currently offering were purchased brand new by just one owner, and most appear hardly played. This is one of the French composer’s most famous and prized works issued in 1962. Saint-Saëns third symphony known as The ‘Organ’ Symphony. This record in superb visual condition and appearing hardly played. However, there is a tiny very fine scratch on side 2 that emits around a dozen clicks. The mark so fine, I had to use a magnifying glass to find the culprit when the clicks were heard. There are few others bar and most of this glorious recording plays to the highest standard. Classical music of this type, in most cases, have varying degrees of volume and very quiet passages, so with some ultra fine groove patterns. Few records of this great age will not have the odd tiny mark or blemish at best. Overall, a scarce first issue that has survived the test-of-time, a very rare opportunity indeed for collectors of this man’s work. But with the few clicks, it will not be for the connoisseur or purists, but be assured, the vast majority of this record plays superbly.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): and this arguablybeing very critical on a fairly flimsy cover this great age. A single format with front Clarifoil laminate, this covers all the folds and ends on the back via the spine and two top and bottom flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by James Upton, it includes the original Decca stereophonic inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: Firstly, this cover is made from quite thin card, so the fact it has survived intact and still quite attractive is a plus. The laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with only a very small lift on the spine that shows little. Little dulling either with only relatively mild record impression that is near impossible to avoid as the barest minimum. Also, creasing has largely been avoided, a few super-fine edge hairlines and a few very small and light half moons that register little. The graphic unfaded and fresh and still looking impressive as-seen. Any hint of ageing this side only light. This front for a rare cover may seldom be seen much better.

Cover Back: The back has aged more with light to moderate darkening of the card and some rim impression. The two flipbacks are solid and still neat with only tiny traces of burring to the bottom one (look very hard). Their ends still reasonably clean with few creases. No sticker marks, writing or tears.

Top Edge: Very thin, so perfect straightness near impossible, this has mild bowing that few will avoid totally. It retains full laminate retention and smooth with no chips or scuffs.

Bottom Edge: Same again and still quite straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little thickening, even as seen viewed end-on. The record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced, and still mainly flat.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with any bowing again light towards the very ends. Some patchy compression and one smallish surface scuff, the ends are pinched. All text unworn under the mainly solid laminate, any traces of peeling tiny.

Corners: All corners remain in very fine neat condition with no knocks and most with excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A fine all-round example of this very fragile 1960’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. A little aged on the back, but so hard to avoid over this amount of time. It will please many collectors, but quite for the purists.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): with some corner crinkle/mild creasing near the corners. This has two pristine window circles and the polylining still reasonably clear and attached. The paper darkened with age, all edges unsplit with no repairs. This is British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better, even under my bright grading lamp, I still found it immensely difficult to see that super-fine stylus mark that causes the aforementioned clicks. There are few other marks or blemishes bar traces of dulling from the inner sleeve polylining. That hardly unusual for a record this age and clearly not removed for probably decades. That is a trait of records stored in these soft-lined inners, but this dulling is harmless. Still an impressive visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed on the highest quality Decca vinyl. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any other surface traces very few and faint. As most will know, classical music has varying degree of volume, so the groove patterns are in places ultra fine and delicate. This no exception, in fact this has some of the finest compact grooves I have seen to date, so few will escape the off blemish at best. Visually a lovely record that should please many collectors, but with the clicks mentioned already, this one not quite for the purists who only want perfection at any cost.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This magnificent piece plays mostly above it’s high visual grading with little else to fault bar the dozen or so clicks from that ultra fine tiny mark. The odd couple or three others throughout the piece also, but given the complexity and quietness of this symphony in places, will any copy really play with none? The mark so fine and faint, I can believe it sounded, hard enough to even seen it. But this is why I play all my records to find such issues, a quick visual grading would not have even detected this I feel sure. This offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – even that deep organ part on side two – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Yes, a tiny possible mishap, but sometimes records this delicate could even have them from new, it is or was hardly unusual. The fairly brief clicks apart, this was a pleasure to experience, this being played on a very sensitive system. It could still prove difficult to find significantly better and can be recommended to those tolerant of blemishes – this a rare opportunity, but not for those who want totally pristine sound throughout. That will prove a massive task.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
