Description

Here is an opportunity to own one of the rarest, most sought after classical recordings ever made.  Featuring Maria Meneghini Callas as Medea in the opera by Luigi Cherubini, it was recorded in the Tetro Alla Scala, Milan, in 1958.  The orchestra is conducted byTullio Serafin and the chorus master is Norberto Mola.  Supporting Maria Callas are Picchi, Scotto, Modesti, Pirazzini, Marimpietri, Galossi and Giacommotti.  This 3-record boxed set is on the Columbia blue and silver label, SAX 2290/2291/2292, and is the original British pressing.  It includes the booklet with texts in Italian and English, and the blue stereo leaflet.  The records are all in "Emitex" inner sleeves.  The box itself is generally intact with some general wear and ageing.  There are a couple of small tears on the back and some light staining but the front is still clean and fresh.  I would grade the box around VG+ to EX-.  The records themselves are generally clean and play well.  A few light scuffs and surface marks are visible under strong light but do not affect play.  Disc 1 is graded EX.  Disc 2 is graded EX- with a small light scratch on side 4 which causes some ticks for a few revolutions.  The distraction is minimal.  Disc 3 is also graded EX- with a similar light scratch on side 5.  This is being strict, as I appreciate the importance and value of this item.  However, this set has been around for 46 years, almost as long as me, so it is amazing that it has survived in this condition.  The labels are all clean and bright and I cannot see any spindle marks.  The booklet does have some light ageing to the cover but is clean inside and completely intact.  The leaflet is as new.  Overall, this item is in a highly acceptable condition.  The music is wonderful, and beautifully recorded.  It is a treat for the classical music lover.  Because of the rarity of this item, I have set a moderate reserve.  Please feel free to email me with any questions.  I ship worldwide and use secure packaging, and this item will be insured at my expense.  Please note that I do not accept international money orders or similar means of payment.  I prefer PayPal and do not charge extra for this service. Cheques and postal orders are also acceptable.  Good luck!
