"Shakey" Horton was the GREATEST Chess records harmonica player, second only to Little Walter (and, possibly, Sony Boy Williamson). His harp graced practically all seminal Chess recordings and he made cameo appearances on recordings by Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Bo Didley and many, many others. In 1964 he was given an opportunity to record a solo album (which, for many years would for be his last). The album is an incredible conglomerate of blues harmonica songs, backed by the incredibly competent musicianship of Buddy Guy, guitar, and Bobby Buster, organ, among others. The words cannot describe the mood and the ambience of this album. Think of this as a late-rainy-night car driving music. This is blues at its aural and moody, funky, playful best. Most importantly, this rare record - which is next to impossible to find even in mono version - appears here in glorious, wide-channel stereo. The instruments are clearly and vividly separated between the channels. The sound of individual instruments is absolutely palpable - you can feel Buddy Guy play in your living room!!! And last, but not the least important, this appears to be an ANALOG recording, pressedon a quality vinyl, something the original "Chess" label was not known for. A BLUES MUST!!!
***
Big Walter Horton, sometimes known as Shakey Walter Horton, is one of the most influential blues harmonica players of all time, and a particular pioneer in the field of amplified harmonica. He isn't as widely known as his fellow Chicago blues pioneers Little Walter or Sonny Boy Williamson II, due mostly to the fact that, as a rather shy, quiet individual, he never had much taste for leading his own bands or recording sessions. But his style was utterly distinctive, marked by an enormous, horn-like tone, virtuosic single-note lines, fluid phrasing, and an expansive sense of space. Horton's amplified harp work graced sides by Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rogers, Otis Rush, Johnny Shines, Tampa Red, and many others; he was frequently cited as an inspiration by younger players, and most accounts of his life mention a testimonial from legendary bassist/songwriter Willie Dixon, who once called Horton "the best harmonica player I ever heard."

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).
(c) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(d) Stereo copies of this album are NOT believed to exist (we are not entirely sure) although some record guides and price books list them.
(e) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER
THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4 (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)
- Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)
- Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging (nothing significant).
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (BARELY VISIBLE)
- Cover has a minor wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the back panel
- Cover has two corners slightly dinged (nothing significant)
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
