Shirley Elizabeth Collins MBE (born 5 July 1935) is a British folksinger who was a significant contributor to the English Folk Revival of the 1960s and 1970s. She often performed and recorded with her sister Dolly, whose accompaniment on piano and portative organ created unique settings for her sister's plain, austere singing style. Shirley Collins and her older sister, Dolly, grew up in the Hastings area of East Sussex in a family which kept alive a great love of traditional song. Songs learnt from their grandfather and from their mother's sister, Grace Winborn, were to be important in the sisters' repertoire throughout their career. On leaving school, at the age of 17, Collins enrolled at a teachers' training college in Tooting, south London. However, in London she also involved herself in the early folk revival and in 1954, at a party hosted by Ewan MacColl, she met Alan Lomax, the famous American folk collector, who had moved to Britain to avoid the McCarthy witch-hunt, which was then raging in America. Lomax and Collins made a folk song collecting trip in the Southern states that lasted from July to November 1959, and resulted in many hours of recordings, featuring performers such as Almeda Riddle, Hobart Smith, and Bessie Jones, and is noted for the discovery of Mississippi Fred McDowell.
This is the rare first issue album WITHOUT reference to E.M.I. labels and with first issue A-1, B-1 matrix’s.
Both record labels are in superb Near Mint condition, beautiful bright and undamaged record labels with just a few centre spindle lines visible.
Side 1 matrix, SHVL 771 A-1 and Side 2, SHVL 771 B-1.
Side 1 Stamper, 1 R, and Side 2, 1 G.
Both sides of the LP are in beautiful undamaged Near Mint condition, stunningly clean, bright Vinyl surfaces to both sides, there are no scratches or scuffs, with just a couple of light hairlines.
The LP play’s without faults.
The Vinyl LP is protected in it’s original Excellent front and back laminated Garrod & Lofthouse Gate-Fold sleeve. This sleeve is a superb example without any major damage with just mild corner bumps and a couple of scratches to the back panel.
