SHYLOCK - ILE DE FIEVRE (CBS #82862 France 1978)

 

"Ile de Fievre" is their masterpiece, and one of the greatest French records I’ve ever heard.

 

The descriptions of the first album also apply here (dissonant symphonic rock), but the

 

results are much better. The thirteen-minute opening track is a classic. Based on a long

 

chord sequence, but full of interesting playing, it only goes through a few changes but remains

 

unbelievably vital throughout- and it’s much catchier than this type of music typically is. 

 

The next track sounds like an improv, and is not unlike what King Crimson were doing at their

 

live shows in 1973 and 1974, though I actually think this track is more memorable than any

 

of the many King Crimson improvs. The rest of the album is not quite as stellar as these first

 

two tracks, but it’s still very good, with a gradual turn to the very bizarre, culminating with

 

some really spooky synthesizers closing the album...
