Description
HERE IS a clean, original, pre-war shellac, gold-print, master pressing of this terrific, epochal record, "SING SING SING." I specify its originality, because after 1939, most copies were dubbed, and are frightfully common - Victor kept it in print that way till the end of the 78 era. The one on offer here, however, from 1937-38, is The McCoy!

BENNY GOODMAN AND HIS ORCHESTRA had an epic year in 1937, which culminated in the great January, 1938 concert at Carnegie Hall. This made national heroes of Goodman and his men, and legitimized Swing for good.
One of their singular accomplishments that year was the monumental "SING, SING, SING." It began as a simple arrangement of the Louis Prima tune; gradually, more elements were added by the various soloists and sections, until it "growed" into a roaring, twelve-minute extravaganza - the only such occurrence in the history of the Goodman band. This Victor record shows the piece almost complete, crowned at Carnegie by Jess Stacy's amazing piano solo.
"Sing, Sing, Sing" has lived on to be practically the National Anthem of Swing, iconic to every latter-day Swing Band, who have elevated the Goodman-Krupa clarinet-and-tom-toms to cult status.
This original 12-inch "Round Gold" Victor 36205 is in E condition. A few scratches, and one needle drop near the beginning of side one, which will track, maybe with a little prodding. By the way, this record ALMOST was issued on "Scroll," coming out only days after Victor changed its label!
PHOTOS: 1) Benny blowing up a storm; 2) The Goodman band, in their "casual" west-coast whites, roaring hot in "Hollywood Hotel." There's a "ringer" in this picture: the last trumpeter on the right in the top row is non-member Johnny "Scat" Davis, more of a comedian than a brass man.
