THE SLEEPERS
One of the earliest San Francisco punk bands, the Sleepers were also one of the first U.S. outfits
to stretch the boundaries of the style into what is recognized today as "post-punk."
The Sleepers came from Palo Alto, a quiet college town south of San Francisco. Hugely popular in San Francisco, they were among the key groups to emerge from the punk and new wave scene which centered around the Mabuhay Gardens (aka the Fab Mab), a former Filipino restaurant that became to SF what CBGBs was to New York. They were primarily noted for Ricky Williams' (who was Crime's original drummer, and later sang with Toiling Midgets) moody vocal style and twisted lyrics, riding on the neo-psychedelic guitar-work of Michael Belfer (also of Tuxedomoon). The Sleepers original line-up was: Ricky Williams [Vocals], Tim Mooney [Drums], Paul Draper [Bass], and Michael Belfer [Guitar]

San Francisco post-punk rockers the Sleepers were a short-lived unit, breaking up and re-forming more times than they actually got around to playing gigs in their short, tumultuous existence. Though singer Ricky Williams went on to play with Crime and guitarist Michael Belfer would shine brightly in Tuxedomoon, the Sleepers hovered in shaky obscurity in the Bay Area between 1977 and 1981, producing only Painless Nights as evidence of their contributions to the often foggy early days of punk rock. The album captures a more fluid, post-Joy Division take on punk than the more metallic offerings of the band's Southern Californian contemporaries, as Williams' loose and often improvised lyrics counter tight guitar riffs and a textural backdrop from the rest of the band...(AllMusic)
