SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON
1965 BLUES CLASSICS – still sealed !
The recordings made by John Lee Williamson between 1937 and his death in 1948 and those made between 1951 and 1964 by "Rice" Miller were all originally issued under the name Sonny Boy Williamson. It is believed that Miller adopted the name to suggest to audiences (and to his first record label) that he was the "original" Sonny Boy.
To differentiate between the two musicians, biographers have referred to John Lee Williamson (1914–1948) as "Sonny Boy Williamson I" or "the original Sonny Boy" and to Miller (c.1912–1965) as "Sonny Boy Williamson II".
This collection of songs are mostly from Rice Miller’s sessions with Trumpet Records in 1951-1954. So despite the title of the “Original Sonny Boy Williamson,” this is actually “Sonny Boy Williamson II” who had only recently died at the time of this 1965 release. Imagine how confusing it must have been in the ‘60s when this research was still a new thing.
This vintage blues LP is from the personal collection of blues researcher / writer Mack McCormick and is being sold to raise some needed funds for the Texas Musicians Museum. We appreciate any help in our mission to preserve music.
