SO SONIC WAX RECORDS ARE BACK AND WITH A BRAND NEW ACT ! MEET THE UNSUNG WONDERS A UK BASED SOUL GROUP WITH ITS FOCUS ON RE-VISITING OUR RARE SOUL SISTERS AND BROTHERS RARE VIBES. DISCOVERED ON SOCIAL MEDIA IN NOVEMBER OF 2016 LEE & STEVE JEFFRIES DECIDED TO DIG DEEP INTO THEIR RARE SOUL ESTATE AND PULL OUT SOME CROSSOVER SOUL JAW DROPPERS TO INSPIRE THE GROUP. AFTER A FEW REHEARSALS IT WAS CLEAR THAT THE BAND UNDERSTOOD THE VIBE AND EMBRACED THE CORE ELEMENTS OF WHAT WE CONSIDER A SOULFUL FLOOR FILLER. SO THE DECISION WAS MADE TO MAKE AN ALBUM WITH 6 SOUL FLOOR PACKERS IN A RETRO SOUL STYLE WITH A REGGAE LOVERS ROCK VERSION ON THE FLIP.THE BAND BOASTS UP TO 10 MEMBERS + LEE & STEVE AS EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS. ALL MUSIC IS PLAYED LIVE AND RECORDED ONTO 1?4 INCH REEL TO REEL TAPE. SO KICKING OF THE FIRST OF 6 SONIC WAX UNSUNG WONDERS SINGLES RELEASES IS “THE HURTING IS OVER” . BAND MEMBERS INCLUDE: ?Gilroy Guedes, Oliver Bohm, Taylor Crosby, Oliver Cassidy, Matthew Willshaw, Steve Bland, Daniel Monk.

What band members have done before (who worked with who and where etc.?):

All of us are from different musical backgrounds, some of us are professional sessions players, some purely perform as a hobby, and others are technical audio engineers. At some point in every band members musical career, we’ve either played with, supported or been on tour with high profile artists, naming them would be impossible. We all know each other through playing in soul covers band in the early days, some of us still do. 

Relevant musical history of you:

Oli Bohm and Gilroy Guedes have been performing together since their early teens and have never stopped. Since attending Reggae Dances and the local blues, they discovered the likes of David Rodigan, who educated and inspired them through his live sets & original sound systems. 

Playing and performing these songs to large audiences was only a dream until just under a year ago when Rice n Peas was founded by Oli and Gilroy. The set list consists of songs mainly from the sunshine island of Jamaica and have now evolved to covering soul and country turned reggae numbers, mainly influenced by the gospel churches. 

Gilroy asked Taylor to front the band, a style that was completely new to her, but the relation and influence was more than obvious. Olly Cassidy, the drummer and also youngest member of band, grew up around Oli Bohm and Gilroy Guedes from a very young age absorbing pretty much everything and he has definitely has grown up to be a very talented musician. 

Matthew Willshaw on the Hammond and Andy Price on Piano, joined the band progressively as the band grew bringing their expert knowledge of the genre and personality into the mix. Steve Bland who plays trumpet and Dan Monk who plays saxophone joined the band and all of a sudden the whole set was brought to life. They play inseparable from each other and this is shown through every single song. 

When Nile Barrow who lays down backing vocals and Victor Carrott who is the percussionist started playing with Rice n Peas the missing piece to the puzzle was found! This completely glued the songs together completing the band. The magical thing is that, everyone has known each other for years through the Leicester music scene, but had never worked with each other  until the opportunity came around when Rice n Peas was formed.

Thoughts on new direction i.e. northern soul scene (why are you going in that direction as a band):

Unsung Wonders was created on the success of Rice n Peas. Soul Music was a genre all members of the band had a close connection too, in fact most members played soul music before reggae. However, when approached by Sonic Wax Records it enabled the band to show how Northern Soul and Lovers Rock are not that far apart. It didn't take long for the musicians to completely understand where the influences had come from and then writing the songs and creating the music developed from the inner self.  

In both bands we have discovered that many elements of the groove and instrumentation are linked so obviously, however not so obviously; if you get it, then you get it. We have been in the studio recording just as our predecessors would have, live and straight to tape and have loved doing it so much and cannot wait for the world to hear it. The most exciting thing is that the live recordings have captured the emotions we were going through at the time of when we were recording them; listening back to them just gives us the feeling of wanting to be back there and to just do it again. We are all learning the northern soul movement as we are going along, and the history is amazing so that is really cool.

 Plans this years and hopes for the future:

'The Hurting is Over’ has just been released through Sonic Wax Records. We have received such a heart warming response that has given us confidence to continue doing what we are doing, for the near future anyway. We are currently preparing the infrastructure for going on road to promote our songs and the be a part of the movement. Someone once told the band, there are two types of people in the world, one that gets it and one that doesn’t; for those who get it, will get it, get it?
